High School “FLEXES” Its Schedule

Submitted by  Christopher Adams

A new FLEX period hits YSHS this year.  The period evolved over the years from a traditional homeroom, to Advisory, to now what is known as FLEX.  FLEX is a Mascot in jpeg formatstructured, 26-minute academic period, designed for students to receive help from their content teachers, study, read, start homework, make-up a quiz, or attend a study session. Students may ask to see one of their teachers or teachers may request a student report to them during FLEX. Either way, the students are receiving extra support. In addition to receiving academic help and support, students are able to monitor their grades and academic goals with guidance from their FLEX teacher.

The York Suburban Middle School CHIPS (Caring Helpers Igniting Peer Success) are busy at work serving their peers and the school community. CHIPS are 8th grade students who are also members of the Middle School Friends of Rachel (F.O.R.) program, promoting a chain reaction of kindness within the school and community. Students interested in becoming a member of the CHIPS subgroup of Friends of Rachel go through an application and teacher recommendation process. CHIPS are expected to be friendly, helpful and responsible students, committed to serving as mentors to their peers. Under the supervision of Mrs. Goodhart and Mrs. Kowitz, CHIPS engage in activities to prepare them for their role as mentors and they meet regularly for planning and program support. CHIPS may be called on to serve in a variety of ways, but much of their time is committed to the orientation of new students and providing academic and organizational support to their peers.

Loopy for Looping at Valley View Elementary

Submitted by Dr. Tawn Ketterman

Kindergarten 2015-2016

The students and families of Mrs. Lindsay Hill’s first grade classroom at Valley View Elementary had an exceptionally smooth start to the school year—because they LOOPED!.

What is Looping? Looping is when a teacher and class stay together from one year to the next.  Mrs. Hill had 19 fantastic students in her classroom last year.  When enrollment created the need for an additional first grade teacher at Valley View, Mrs. Hill volunteered to LOOP with her class! The students remained in tact as a class of 19 and were assigned to Mrs. Hill for first grade.  The greatest benefit to looping is that learning time is optimized! No time is lost to getting to know students, teaching routines, and fostering peer relations—because it is all known from the previous year.  Mrs. Hill was able to begin instruction on Day 1 and pick up right where they left off.  In addition, student and family relationships are already established, This creates a high level of comfort and trust, which makes the transition from half day kindergarten to full day first grade so much easier!  This is one lucky—and close-knit class!
