As a lead up to the York Suburban High School Mini-THON on Friday, February 19, 2016, the Student Council sponsored a Color Clash on Saturday, October 24.

Students, adults — and even dogs — ran the 1.3-mile course  through the high school neighborhood.  At various stations along the way the runners were dusted (or pelted) with brightly colored corn starch that clung to their white T-shirts.  Each participant paid a fee to enter the race.

Following the colorful run, a Color Clash Carnival was held behind the school that featured a bounce house, face painting, arts and crafts, team games, and food.

All the money raised will go towards the Mini-THON total, with the money going to the Four Diamonds Fund at Hershey Medical Center for the treatment and research of pediatric cancer.

YSMS Students Show Their Spirit

The York Suburban Middle School had two special events in October:  “Caught in the Middle Day” and a Spirit Rally.

“Caught in the Middle Day” allowed students to experience their choice of more than three dozen activities and speakers throughout the day.  They ranged from “Canine Cops” to dancing, face painting, decorating cupcakes, lacrosse, basketball, and a variety of careers speakers.

A special part of the day was an assembly from Rachel’s Challenge with a mission to create a safe, connected school environment.

The Spirit Rally the following week focused on the school’s sports teams and friendly competitions.

Both events are traditions at YSMS.

York Suburban parent Mindy Jo Hamme is shown with some of the new instruments purchased through her fund raising efforts.

The district was in need of replacement and additional instruments for students in the elementary school, Mindy was told.  That’s all she had to hear.

The mother of a York Suburban musician, she sprang into action and, with the help of teachers and donations from the community, raised $6,625.

With that money, the district was able to purchase:

16 violins

7 violas

5 cellos

2 bass

11 bows

The instruments were purchased through Kagen and Gaines Music Company in Chicago.  Joe Cali, the owner of the company, provided the instruments at a deep discount equal to  more than double the amount paid.

The new instruments will be used by students whose families cannot afford to purchase their own instruments.
