On Saturday, October 3, YSEF sponsored an Alumni Event during Homecoming weekend.  Alumni Scott Eden (class of ’89) and Becca Kennedy Eden (’90)  hosted the party at Holy Hound Taproom in York. More than 65 alumni turned out to meet and greet each other and raise funds for YSEF.

Mac Brillhart, class of ‘98, and Vice President of YSEF, greeted the guests, thanked all of those involved in the planning of the event, and provided a brief history and description of YSEF.

Celebrity guests included:

  • Shelly Merkle–former guidance counselor, York Suburban High School Assistant Principal, Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and current Superintendent.
  • Ron Herman–cross country coach.
  • Joe Hasenfuss–retired high school teacher and basketball coach.
  • Milt Bushey–retired high school teacher and football coach.
  • Paul Englert–retired high school principal.
  • Brigitte Birch Englert–retired East York Elementary School guidance counselor and coordinator of special education and pupil personnel.
  • Lydia Leik–retired York Suburban Middle School and high school secretary.
  • Ed Moyer–retired middle school teacher.
  • Sharon Stutts–retired middle school teacher.
  • Jane Young–retired high school teacher and coach.
  • Jim Young–retired district music teacher and assistant band director.

A three-generation conversation took place among  retired York Suburban Middle School teacher, Ed Moyer, his former student Tom Triggs, York Suburban alum, current York Suburban High School teacher (and former boys’ basketball coach) and  alum Mac Brillhart, YSEF board member and former student of both men.

Celebrity guest, Lydia Leik, wrote later “I saw some great friends, students, teachers, and administrators. As you may suspect, my biggest thrill was reconnecting with so many of the amazing students I met in 32 years at YSSD.  Some of the occupations these students handle are (just to name a few) chef, business owner, teacher, doctor, nurse, law enforcement, advertising, psychologist, attorney, roofing, dry cleaning, armed forces, optometric technician, jewelry designer, Realtor, factory line assembly, trucking, and my two favorites, stay-at-home mom and stay-at-home dad.  I am in awe of the diversity within and among the students’ career choices. I am truly proud to have known and had the opportunity to spend time with these students during their formative years.”

Guest Sharon Stutts said “the entire experience was such a confirmation of my life. . . . I have truly been blessed in life with such great students.”

The event, sponsored by the newly formed Alumni Committee of YSEF, raised more than $1,200, which will enable YSEF to support additional innovative grants and do more in YSSD classrooms.
