Custodial and Grounds Keeper Personnel Step Up

Hello,

I am very pleased to announce that the York Suburban Education Support Personnel Association (YSESPA) and the York Suburban School Board have come to an agreement which amends the existing contract.  The modifications include a one-year extension though June 2015 for the custodial and grounds keeper personnel in

Dr. Kate Orban

the district.  In addition, the parties agreed to a modification of wages resulting in a savings to the York Suburban School District.

In a statement, the YSESPA said:

“Given the decreased state funding and financial resources available to the district, causing budgetary issues that will profoundly affect its ability to provide quality education with the school district and the association’s understanding of its responsibility in contributing to the efforts of the district to provide quality education, the association seeks to work collaboratively to achieve budgetary savings while maintaining the highest level of education excellence for the students and community served by the district.”

With this agreement and previous agreements, all personnel in the district have initiated revisions to wages and benefits that have immediate and long term financial benefit to the school district, the community, and — most important — our students. Though minor alterations have occurred, York Suburban has been able to maintain all programs for our students.  Further, the district is building the fund balance to plan for the future and any possible funding crises.

My sincerest thanks to the YSESPA and all employees, as well as the entire York Suburban community.  Our future depends upon the quality of education provided to past, present and future students.  York Suburban continues to be the school district of choice in York County.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kate Orban

Basketball Coaching Changes

Two long-time York Suburban High School basketball coaches have resigned their positions.

Tom Triggs has stepped down as coach of the boys’ basketball team and Bob Rudisill has resigned as the coach of the girls’ team.

Tom Triggs (Class of ’79) was a star basketball player at York Suburban.  He still holds the record for the most points in one game (41) and the most rebounds (428) in a season.

He became a U.S. Studies teacher at York Suburban in 1994 and was named the boys’ basketball coach in 1999, taking over for his former coach, Joe Hasenfuss, who most recently served as an assistant coach to Triggs.

Triggs’ teams were 218-120 over the past 13 years, including a District 3 AAA championship in 2009.

Looking back on his years as a coach, Triggs says, “The players I remember the most are not the ones who scored the most points, but those who put in the time to practice with the team.  The ninth, tenth, eleventh player who made the team better.”

Bob Rudisill has been the girls coach for seven seasons.

He finishes his seven years with a 72-88 record, including an 8-13 record this past year.  Prior to taking the girls’ coaching job at York Suburban, he was the coach of the Kennard-Dale boys’ program for 18 years.

Stepping up as the girls’ coach will be Jessica Kemp Barley (Class of ’02).  She was an outstanding player during her years at York Suburban and York College.

Prior to accepting the new coaching position, she had been the coach of junior high team and an assistant to Rudisill.

Learning for Learning’s Sake

By Natalie Marshall, Class of 2012

As high school students begin to gravitate toward particular interests and fields of study, York Suburban High School continues to effectively accommodate students’ desire for further knowledge through a unique academic experience: the independent study.

The independent study is an opportunity for students to create individualized lesson plans, course outlines, and assessments that go beyond the courses offered through the current curriculum.  Under the supervision of faculty academic advisors, these students have furthered their studies in literature, sociology, and French, to name a few.  There are approximately 30 students participating in independent studies at YSHS this year and the types of selected areas of study are vast.

The benefits of independent studies are not limited to the additional education they provide.  In fact, while acquiring a heightened knowledge of the selected study topics, students are able to gain experience in writing, creativity, and most of all, the research process.

The incredible academic liberty of these studies makes student motivation imperative, but most students also cite the guidance of volunteer faculty advisors as a great aid in the independent study work.  Advisors of independent studies contribute not only countless resources to students, but also a great deal of additional time to guide students through their studies.

Most students participating in independent studies say they are grateful for the willingness of their advisors as well as the opportunity as a whole.  Students maintain that the independent study experience is educationally enriching and certainly beneficial for future academic endeavors.

Register for Kindergarten Now

Students entering kindergarten for the 2012-13 school year should be registering now.

Parents should call to make an appointment to register their children at the school they will attend in the fall:  Valley View Elementary School, 885-1220, or Yorkshire Elementary School, 885-1230.

If parents are not sure which school is in their attendance area, they can enter their home address on the district’s website – www.yssd.org – to determine the assigned school.  That information may also be obtained by calling either of the schools.
