IR Fifth Graders ‘Charge’ Gettysburg

Indian Rock Elementary School fifth graders on the Gettysburg Battlefield.

The entire Indian Rock Elementary School fifth grade traveled to Gettysburg to take part in a Civil War reenactment of Pickett’s Charge.

Prior to the trip, the students prepared for the day by doing research, learning to march, and made flags to be part of a Confederate regiment from Virginia.  During the march, the guide gave details as to which soldiers had been wounded, killed, or captured during the battle.

After participating in Pickett’s Charge, the students spent time exploring the Gettysburg Museum to view artifacts from the war and to read more specific information about the Battle of Gettysburg.

In connection with Pi Day, representatives from Student Council ( Carrion Lover-Lilly, Jennifer Seabra, and Elizabeth Snyder) contacted Stephen Lesher, owner/operator of McDonalds on Memory Lane, to see if pies could be obtained for this special occasion.  He personally delivered over 650 warm, freshly baked pies during the lunch periods for a small cost to York Suburban students and staff.
