2016 Fall Sports Season

Submitted by Matthew Marshall, Athletic Director

It has been a positive and successful season for the fall athletic teams at York Suburban. Many of our teams were fortunate enough to qualify for and excel in  post-season play.

Cross Country: Yet again, the Cross Country program upholds the winning tradition with hard work and excellence. Both the girls and boys teams were York County Division II champions. The girls went on to finish 19-1 in the regular season and win 2nd Place in the District 3 Meet and eventually finished 14th in the State. The Boys Team completed the regular season with a 20-0 Record and continued on to a 1st Place finish in Districts followed by a phenomenal 2nd Place showing in States!

Girls Volleyball: This team continued to work hard and improve throughout the season. The girls finished 11-5 and in the regular season and the JV Team also had a strong showing with a 15-1 Record. They represented extremely well in the YAIAA tournament finishing second in a hard fought match to Red Lion. The girls went on to get 3rd Place in Districts defeating a West York team they had many battles with during the season. The girls were fortunate to qualify for States, rounding out a very successful season.

Football: After having one the best seasons in school history, the YS Football Team was able to create another memorable season and build on the tradition of the program. Overcoming two tough early season losses to rattle off 8 wins in a row, the team finished 8-2 and became the Division II Champions for the second year in a row.  This is the first time in 55 years that York Suburban won back to back Division titles. The success has been a total team effort attributed to positive senior leadership and an array of players stepping up when needed. We wish the team luck as we prepare to host the first round of District games against Lampeter-Strasburg on 11/11/16.

Girls Tennis: The girls found great success as a team and individually this season. As a team, the girls finished 9-3, reaping the benefits of the hard work and a positive attitude in practice everyday. Individually, Liv Pindzola was the YAIAA runner-up and qualified for Districts as a sophomore. Samantha Clancy also had a strong individual season, and paired with Liv Pindzola, finished in the 3rd Place in the YAIAA League Doubles Championships; qualifying for Districts.

Girls Soccer: The Girls Soccer Team fought through some close losses early on in the season, but stuck together and finished the season on a strong note! The girls went 4-0 to finish the regular season, winning a thrilling game against one of the division’s top teams, Susquehannock. The successful completion of the regular season qualified the girls for the YAIAA League Champions. The team represented very well in a back and forth game against Dallastown, ultimately ending in a 1-0 loss.

Golf: The Golf Team continued to improve this season finishing third in the Division with a young team competing without seniors. Seven players on the Golf Team qualified for the YAIAA competition which shows great promise for the future.

Thank you to the coaches, faculty, administration and community members for the continual support of our student-athletes through the fall season. That support paired with the excitement created by our band and cheerleading performances provides an environment that can make us YS Proud at all sporting events!

Chromebooks Go 1:1 in Elementary Schools

Did you know we are 1:1 with Chromebooks at Indian Rock and East York?  Our district is committed to providing a variety of tools and our Chromebooks are just one of the many utensils teachers are using to engage students.  Children are NOT plugged in all day, but 1:1 allows for quick and easy access. YSSD  grade 3-5 students are utilizing Chromebooks for individualized engaging activities as well as whole group instruction and assessments, making checks for understanding way more fun and allowing teachers to provide immediate feedback.   Many of the online tools allow for diversified instruction tailored to individual needs. This online access prepares our 21st Century learners and enhances research, creative thinking, collaboration, and communication.

Dance-A-Thons Provide Fun and Fundraising

The students of Valley View Elementary were dancing for dollars on October 28!  Each year, the PTO coordinates a Dance-A-Thon where students are sponsored for 30 minutes of dancing during the school day.  All of the profits are utilized by the Valley View PTO to help make Valley View a great place to learn!  The PTO pays for school assemblies, field trips, student rewards, teacher projects, family fun nights, and some classroom technology.  This year’s Dance-A-Thon raised over $12,000 for the PTO! Thank you to a supportive school community!

Teachers Engage in Professional Development

Submitted by Dr. Patricia Maloney

The York Suburban School District had a great day of professional development that was filled with exciting learning opportunities for staff. One of the district initiatives is student engagement.  Keeping pace with that initiative, the high school staff discussed student engagement through brain-based-instruction.

In addition to personalized professional development, the middle school staff focused on student engagement through relevance, relationships and expertise. The staff collaboration was focused on personalizing activities to accommodate individual student needs, interests and abilities to maximize student engagement investment in learning. Elementary staff also focused on personalizing activities with an emphasis on English Language Arts and curricular alignment to the PA Core Standards as well as enhancing their use of technology integration.  Teachers collaborated on skills and strategies to assist their students. The title of the ELA program was Sharing the love for our students……giving our students the tools they need to survive today’s academic world together.

Eighth Grade Holds Mock Election

Submitted by Mrs. Cynthia Eifert

msmockelec

On November 7th, the day before the actual polls opened for the 2016 Presidential Election, the students at York Suburban Middle School had the opportunity to participate in their own Mock Presidential Election.  To help the students of YSMS better understand our election process, a group of eighth grade students (Macie Brown, Jack Ports, Caitlin Springer, Brooke Sargen, Alex Gleba, Devlin Ravegum, Michael Forster, and Ella Dunmire) created a video which outline how the electoral process works.  With the assistance of Mr. Moran, Mrs. Campbell, and Mrs. Eifert, the students decided to simulate the electoral process at the middle school.

To model the electoral process, each classroom was designated to represent one of our 50 states or the District of Columbia,  Each room voted and the appropriate number of electoral votes was recorded based on the popular votes for that classroom.  To simulate how election results would actually come in on election night, classes voted by time zone and the results were reported live from  the t.v. studio.  Mr. Jackson and Mr. Payne did a wonderful job reporting and analyzing the results as they came into the studio.  The students were able to see comparisons between popular and electoral votes and to watch to see which presidential candidate would reach the magic number of 270 electoral votes needed to become President of the United States.  The students left school that day with a better understanding of the election process and with an increased anticipation to see what the actual results would be in the 2016 Presidential Election.

Culture Club for Language Learners

Did you know Canada has the longest coastline in the world, Russia has nine different time zones, or the world’s tallest waterfall is located in Venezuela? The English Language Learners participating in the after-school Culture Club are discovering interesting facts like these from all over the world. The high school and middle school students are paired with intermediate and primary students to work together on a country research project for the Communities That Care Multicultural Festival at the Middle School on Thursday, March 30 from 7 – 8:30 p.m. The Culture Club will meet one Wednesday each month at Yorkshire. The first meeting was a success with 35 students participating in interactive get-to-know you activities, taking a look back at previous Multicultural festivals, and delving into Indian culture with Rupa Asuri from East York. We have students from over 17 countries at York Suburban and we are excited to have more opportunities to celebrate and learn together.

East York Elementary Hosts First Trunk or Treat

East York Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) held their first Trunk or Treat on October 28. Trunk-or-treat events bring Halloween to parking lots where children go from car to car and get candy.  The event has grown in popularity as another safe and fun option to the traditional house to house event. Everyone at East York had awesome costumes and a great time.
