Sum Dog Champions at Indian Rock Elementary

Submitted by Mrs. Sherri Mahorney

Mrs. Mahorney’s third grade class at Indian Rock entered into a National Math Competition through SumDog. The students were very excited to compete with other schools. Each student had the opportunity to answer up to 1,000 questions during the competition and scores were assigned based on the number of correctly answered questions. Out of 840 classes entered, Mrs. Mahorney’s class came in ninth in the nation and  first out of the 102 Pennsylvania classes that entered!  Indian Rock’s very own, Austin Kefauver, was one of the top ten students of 18,294 competitors! These students made Dr. Gulley and Mrs. Mahorney very proud and appreciative of all their hard work and excitement for learning.

RED-OUT for Red Ribbon Week

A “RED-OUT” Dance Activity Night was held at York Suburban Middle School on Friday, October 28. The student council of YSMS sponsored and planned this student event as a culminating activity to Red Ribbon Week, a national, week long campaign focused on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

Right after school that day, 150 sixth-graders attended the event and showed their support as they wore red. Later in the evening 200 seventh and eighth-graders clad in red attended the second session of the RED-OUT. Students were treated to two hours of dancing, face painting, carnival games, refreshments, raffles, and gym activities like “knock-out,” hoola hoops, basketball, and a 4-square tournament.

In conjunction with the Impact Foundation of YS, the student council asked students attending to donate a toiletry item to the Impact Closet that has recently been established at YSMS with the help of the school’s chapter of Friends of Rachel. More than 300 items were donated and will be stocked in the closet for those students of YSMS in need.

The YSMS Parent-Student Organization  also helped in the sponsoring of this event and provided snacks and prizes. It was a great night of fun, friendship, and YS pride!

High School Helpers at Valley View Elementary

 Submitted by Dr. Tawn Ketterman

techta

Valley View Elementary has a long standing tradition of having high school helpers in the classrooms with students.  These students, affectionately known as TAs (Teaching Assistants), come to Valley View daily as one of their assigned periods in their high school schedule.  The students are assigned to one classroom, and each semester, a special bond is formed between the Valley View students, the high school students, and the classroom teacher.

Valley View Elementary has also developed a thriving partnership with York County School of Technology.  High School students in the Child Development Program come to Valley View every morning to have hands on experience working with children in the classrooms.  The high school students work with students in kindergarten through second grade, and they also assist in the pre-school, kindergarten prep and kindergarten enrichment programs in the Early Learning Program.  As you walk the halls of Valley View, you will see high school helpers from York Suburban and from YCST  working with individual students and small groups of students on a variety of learning activities that are prescribed by the classroom teacher.

It is a great learning experience for the high school students—-and an excellent way for our young learners to receive more assistance in learning. It’s a win-win situation where EVERYONE learns more!

Early Learning Program Elects Presidents

Submitted by Erika Alvarez

elc1East York Elementary before and after care students took the 2016 Presidential Election to a different level during before and after school sessions.  They conducted research on the election process and practiced the processes in the classroom. Different students were nominated for President and Vice President, understanding that if elected each would be responsible for assisting staff in daily and weekly planning, sharing ideas on how to enhance the homework club, and advocating for fellow Hildebrandt students. Over the course of one month, nominees prepared speeches that discussed their plans to help the positive continuation of a quality before and after school program, participated in debates of different topics that involved the classroom and students, and  even created posters/banners to hang to win over votes.  The East York Before and After School Election, took place on Friday, November 4.  The winners, as a result of a tie, were Austin Stern and Cianna Colon!

Congratulations to these students for taking on the role of President for York Suburban Early Learning Program at East York Elementary.
