Were you aware that on Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun? Anyone within the path of totality can see one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights – a total solar eclipse. This will be the fourth day of the school year for YS students! Valley View and Yorkshire elementary schools wanted to prepare their early learners in advance! During the month of May, grade levels took two hours of instructional time to cycle students though many stations to provide important background knowledge for understanding an eclipse. Students learned about the sun, the moon, shadows, and the difference between a solar and lunar eclipse. A special thank you to our science curriculum representatives for creating many creative and exciting activities to engage our young learners. Look for more information about ECLIPSE day in the August PRIDE!

The annual York Suburban Middle School Art Show had a fantastic turn out Wednesday night. The YS talent was on display and family, friends, students, and community members were impressed. Mrs. McAuliffe thanks everyone for their support of the arts at YSMS.
Sixth grade: Students did three projects. The first was a clay sculptural animal where they learned about Oaxacan woodcarved animals and how they create 3-D animals. The second was a colorful landscape where students learned about perspective and different color theory movements, such as: realism, impressionism, and fauvism. The third was a self-portrait where students learned about Chuck Close while also comparing his artwork to other famous artists’ self-portraits.
Seventh grade: Students began their rotation with a photography self-portrait where they practiced different photography strategies and editing effects. They then looked at graphic design and advertising. They created a personal logo while keeping in mind the rules of logo design, created a linoleum cut stamp, and printed their stamp using printing ink. Their third project was a charcoal still life, and their fourth project was inspired by surrealism. After doing two creativity activities, they created a surrealism scene using collage materials.
Eighth grade: Students researched a famous artist and designed a functional ceramic box that was inspired by the life or the work of their artist. Once the box was fired in the kiln students applied glaze to the finished box. Students then used either tempera paint, chalk pastel, oil pastel, or watercolor to complete a pop art inspired pop culture drawing. Their final project was a choice project. Students had the choice to either write an artist’s proposal for a project of their choosing, create a painting that parodies a famous painting, design a poster series, study human movement, photograph a paper that changes the photograph, or illustrate a favorite quote.

Thursday, May 11 marked the third annual Crumbling and Guyer Poetry Slam at Indian Rock. After creating a Poetry Portfolio, the fifth graders selected several poems to share in an “open mic” forum. Then, dressed in beatnik black honoring the hipster generation, the students unveiled their thoughts, feelings, and aspirations to their loved ones in attendance at the Slam. As in previous years, it marked an acknowledgement of the power of words through a celebration of poetic forms. We are proud of our poets!

It was another successful spring season for the York Suburban Middle School volleyball teams! The Junior Varsity team finished another undefeated season with a 13-0 record (overall set record of 26-1). Add a tournament championship, and they close their season with an overall record of 38-2. The Varsity team also finished with a back-to-back 13-0 undefeated record (set record of 26-0). They were also undefeated (12-0) when winning their tournament championship, leading to a 38-0 record throughout the season. It certainly was another amazing season for both teams!

On May 3, 2017, seven students from the Linoln Intermedite Unit #12 Autism Support class were joined by the eighth grade students in the Puzzle Partners club to attend the York Revolution game for Baseball in Education Day. Students were treated to a game, lunch, meeting with Rev’s mascot, Downtown, and participating in the Field of Dreams. They were also invited to participate in a “High Five” tunnel to greet the players as they took the field. All of the students then assembled at first base for the National Anthem. Puzzle Partners was announced as one of the Dream Teams that attended the game. The weather was beautiful and the game was exciting.
Puzzle Partners is a club consisting of twenty general education students and the Autism Support class. The goal of this club is to spread awareness, acceptance, fun, and fellowship through club meetings, outside activities such as bowling, baseball games, and the Autism Walk. All of the students benefit from this interaction. Students with Autism learn social skills such as starting conversations, maintaining friendships, and learning social boundaries. The general education students are learning patience and tolerance of those with different learning styles, communication, and behavioral needs.
Puzzle Partners held their second annual walk for Autism Awareness on May 6, 2017, at York Suburban High School track from 9:00am-12:00pm. All money raised stays in the district to help continue to foster these interactions between the general education students and the LIU#12 classes.

Fourth grade students at Indian Rock participated in a Wax Museum in early May. Students had to read about a famous person and publish 7 of the main events in their person’s life in a fold-out project. Then, they had to try to memorize their lines in first person, which was tough, but they did an awesome job! Finally, students dressed up like their famous person and brought in props to adorn their desks. Parents were invited to school to enjoy the museum setting, but also to learn a few things about some historical figures. All, including the teachers, were highly impressed with the fine work of our students!
