Message from the Superintendent

As we close out a wonderful 2016-17 school year, it has been particularly joyful to reflect on the year through the eyes of our graduates. Within a twelve hour period, we enjoyed our Kindergarten Graduation ceremonies and our more formal Commencement Program honoring our high school graduates. While quite different programs, the themes were very similar.

Our youngest graduates shared their joy through huge smiles, big hugs, and happy songs. They readily spoke about all that they learned and the many friendships they formed through the year. While summer fun is on their minds, these young children are already looking forward to next school year.

The High School Commencement Program was a bit more sophisticated but also included smiles, hugs, and music. There were words of inspiration as our graduates spoke eloquently about service to the school, community, and the larger world. They shared their appreciation and love for one another as well as for the larger community. The excitement in the gym could not be contained as these young adults are clearly ready to face the challenges ahead.

The York Suburban community should be PROUD! From our youngest learners to our newest alumnus, and every student in between, we have many reasons to be inspired. Our children are our future. Our future is very bright.

Graduation Walk – A New Tradition

Submitted by Dr. Brian Ellis

On the morning of graduation this year, York Suburban started a new tradition that promises repetition for years to come. Our graduating seniors, donning their caps and gowns, had the opportunity to visit all of the district buildings. In each building, the elementary and middle school teachers and students lined the hallway to cheer for the graduates. Numerous hugs between seniors and former teachers, and many high fives were shared by present and future graduates. The seniors walking their old hallways, seeing former teachers, and hearing the congratulations from the whole YS community. But the younger students also experienced looking up to the “big kids” and thinking about how they, too, would one day wear the same cap and gown.

The final part of the walkthrough brought the K-12 school system full circle. At Yorkshire Elementary, the seniors joined all the kindergarten parents to applaud the kindergarten students as they processed to their own graduation. While at Valley View Elementary, the high school graduates each escorted one of the kindergarten graduates to their ceremony.

Summer Track and Stadium Renovations and Access

York Suburban Community:

The district is currently renovating the high school stadium facility for security and structural updates. The stadium and track will be CLOSED from approximately May 31, 2017 – August 1, 2017.

We are working hard to provide safe and secure facilities for our students and community residents.  To ensure safety for everyone, a new process for residents to gain access to the track and stadium will be instituted upon the reopening of the facility.   We understand this change may create a small inconvenience for some but it adds a high level of security for all facility users.  As we strive to provide YSSD residents with continued access to the track and stadium field, we appreciate your patience and cooperation.  Please click on the Stadium/Track Community Guidelines link below for more specific information.

Thank you for your understanding.

Post Prom Says Thank You!

Submitted by Gina Kouma

This year we celebrated the 17th York Suburban Post Prom.  Since 2001, York Suburban has provided a safe and supervised environment for students to enjoy a final event of entertainment and time with friends after another successful prom event.  For Post Prom 2017, we partied like we were on a tropical beach, with the theme of “Get Your Luau On!” With the support of student and parent fundraising efforts, donations from local businesses, and amazing commitment from volunteers – we had a great time continuing the tradition with our students through early morning hours. (I think we have finally caught up on sleep)

The school was transformed into a  luau by parent volunteer Christine Kirk. Treasury and fundraising efforts were led by Gina Kouma. To get the night started students were met at the door by Emily Clark and her team of volunteers.  Fun games with a beach theme were organized by Tracey Hufnagle, Brad and Tacy Kessler, Lisa Schmittle and Nikki Hunt. We had the full attention of the students during the raffle prize drawings organized by Lisa Hocker. Throughout the night, students had the opportunity to win prizes such as an iPad mini, Hershey Park tickets, a certificate to the Escape games and many more.  And of course, a delicious selection of food was organized by Lori Ward.

Since Post Prom is made possible by the hard work and donations by families and businesses in the community, the Post Prom committee would like to acknowledge those who support this years’ event.

Moving Up at Valley View Elementary

Submitted by Dr. Tawn Ketterman

Our seniors weren’t the only ones to graduate this past week!  Valley View kindergarten also has a tradition of celebrating the end of the FIRST year of school with a graduation ceremony! A separate ceremony was held for the morning, afternoon, and full day kindergarten sessions. The ceremonies were well attended with proud parents and grandparents who watched the students share songs and get their “diploma” and a farewell hug from their teacher.   Congratulations to all of our Kindergarten graduates!  A special addition to the morning ceremony occurred when the graduating seniors stopped by to process through the halls to be congratulated by our younger learners and former teachers.  The senior procession was extra special as each senior walked a kindergarten graduate down the aisle to begin the Kindergarten ceremony.  Final year graduates and first year graduates—hand in hand!!

The Alpha and Omega of Kindergarten at Yorkshire Elementary

Submitted by Kathy Pavoncello

The month of May was big for Yorkshire kindergarten students, both current and future. On Thursday, May 11, the school hosted its annual “Countdown to Kindergarten,” a chance for future kindergarten students and their parents to familiarize themselves with the school and staff. Families received ideas for fun ways to practice readiness skills over the summer months, and learned where to gather essential materials to aid that practice. The 2017-2018 school year will mark a new beginning for both Yorkshire and Valley View Elementary Schools. This incoming class of kindergarteners will be the first to experience full-day education in the York Suburban School District.

Just as we celebrated new beginnings, we also celebrated the end of a special year of kindergarten on May 24 and 25. Our morning, afternoon, and full day kindergarten classes stepped onto the stage to accept diplomas of graduation to first grade. They acknowledged their educational progress, as well as a year of fun at Yorkshire. A special addition to the graduation ceremony included a parade of  Yorkshire alumni, now graduating seniors, processing through the building and gathering in the auditorium to applaud the kindergarten graduates. The new tradition was a wonderful way for Yorkshire students to visualize their future, and for the Class of 2017 to fondly remember its primary past.
