The Cost of College

by Ariel Rivera

College is a place where some kids dream of going; however, there are other students who do not go. Is it because of all the schooling before college? Or is because the cost is too much to afford?

Some people have careers they need to go to college for to get the degree to go into that particular career choice, but have a hard time doing that because of how much they will owe in student loans. Then that person might decide not to go to college and look into a different career that will not even be of interest to them.

Throughout America, there are people who want to go to the college of their choice, but their family may not be able to financially support them. Once someone is in debt they might spend their entire lives trying to get out of it.

Colleges in America are far more expensive than most other countries. There are cheaper options you can find that offer a wide variety of courses that can be  taken that might actually have to do with the career. Most people will not look at it in the way that there are affordable options that offer the same courses as a more expensive college and will go with the expensive option and most likely go into debt.

A way to avoid debt and to go to the college of your choice is to earn a scholarship. A scholarship by definition is a grant or payment made to support a student’s education, awarded on the basis of academic or other achievements. Scholarships are not easily earned so to increase chances of earning one, working harder to show the person who is giving the scholarship see that it is well deserved. If a debt is to be avoided, start looking into getting a scholarship may be a great option to start looking into or looking for cheaper colleges.

Freshman Brendan Mikkelson said, “Knowing how bad student debt already is, I would rather look into another option rather than pay the already bad debt and more.”

Students already know how bad debt can be. So will colleges lower expenses or will students look into cheaper and more affordable options that may help them? It is up to the student to make that big decision.
