A Record Number of Women are Running for President of the U.S.

by Rachael Lynch

Three women candidates have announced that they are running for the 2020 presidential election. Mr. Triggs, a knowledgeable social sciences teacher states, “I think the three women [Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Elizabeth Warren] are independent thinkers, they have experience. I think they have reached the level politically, as well in the business world because they are independent thinkers, because they are not intimidated, because they have a vision they have a plan of where they want to take the country” history teacher Tom Triggs stated. According to Senior Sean Smith, “I think it [A woman running for President] is fine as long as it is not Hillary.”

According to Kamala Harris’s campaign website, Harris is known as a “fearless advocate for the voiceless and vulnerable and a vocal determines fighter on behalf of all people.” Harris serves on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, as well as the “Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Select Committee On Intelligence, and the Committee On Budget.” She was also the District Attorney of San Francisco for two terms. “She was a very good prosecutor in San Francisco,” Triggs said.

Kirsten Gillibrand serves on the U.S. Senate on behalf of New York. She was also a member of the House of Representatives. As a member of the democratic party, she is focused on Women’s Empowerment and Opportunity, Health Care as a basic human right, Immigration reform, and Environmental issues. Sophomore Sofia Guyer said, “anyone could be successful if  they make the promises they have in a campaign, and are able to hear both sides.” If Gillibrand is able to do these two things, she may be able to take the title of President.

When asked who the three women running for president were, three out of four people were very quick to name Elizabeth Warren. As stated on BallotPedia,  “Warren is a Democratic member of the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts.” Her other positions as a leader include, “serving as Chair of Congressional Oversight Panel for Troubled Asset Relief Program… she was instrumental in the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and was tapped by President Barack Obama to set up the new agency as Assistant to the President and Special Advisor Secretary of the Treasury.”

“Saying that we are in a revolution today, I think it would only help where women were getting even more respect in this country when in comes to positions of leadership and respectability” Triggs claims. When asked if a woman could be successful in running for president, senior Cara Fielding said, “Yes, considering how our politics are right now and how everything is a mess, the public is more open to other options.”
