Low-Income Families Shop and Stay on Budget

By Imani Carroll

Now more than ever, low-income families have better access to quality household necessities for cheap prices.

Many thrift stores have second hand furniture, clothes, kitchen appliances, and even electronics. The things available to the public is good for low-income families and even young people moving out of their homes. To take advantage of the deals, here are some great local resources!

Most thrift shops have special sales on certain days. The Salvation Army located on 1090 Haines Rd. in East York has specials every Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesdays, all items except ones marked with a pink tag are half off. On Thursdays, all pink tags are half off. Thursday is also the day of the week that the store puts up new items.

This Salvation Army has everything a low-income family (or someone looking to save money) might need regarding clothing and household equipment. The store offers affordable second hand kitchen appliances. You can find toasters, rice cookers, food processors, and conventional ovens. They have plenty of plates, pots, and utensil sets, too.

A Salvation Army located in northeast Baltimore is now going to be offering groceries to the area, which happens to be one of the poorest in the country. “Shape”, an online blog, says that these areas are miles away from the nearest grocery store and many people in these poor communities have no access to reliable transportation. It’s often called a “food desert” because of how inaccessible fresh produce and quality groceries are for the residents. This Salvation Army market will offer cheaper prices and even have a “Red Shield Club” that grants its customers further discounts.

For people that are not in the Baltimore area, there are still many other alternatives for more affordable groceries and other household necessities. For example, the Dollar Tree offers excellent resources for cheap. Everything in the store is only a dollar or less. The stores are scattered all over York, and there is one right across the street from the above mentioned Salvation Army to make the trips easier on gas.

The Dollar Tree over the years has increased the presence of name brands in the store. There you can find many perishable foods like tuna, chicken, rice, beans, and many canned fruits and vegetables. There’s desserts like cake and cookie mixes. Stores with frozen sections have ice cream, too. They also offer general groceries one might need like eggs or milk.

The franchise also has a variety of brand name cleaning products including Clorox bleach and Dawn dish soap. There are also store name brands available. Cleaning tools are also available which means one can come to one store to fulfill all of their cleaning needs.

There are so many resources for struggling families, or even people looking to save money, to get things they may need. There are discount grocery stores all over York and other afforable stores that offer everything one might need to live comfortably or even for a new home. It’s always encouraged to research these types of stores in your area and check out some deals that may be waiting for you!
