Students to March on Washington to Demand Change

by Faith Speece

On March 24, students across the US will march on Washington to advocate for stricter gun laws and demand that their lives and safety become a priority.

March For Our Lives was created by students across the country who are taking action to stop the epidemic of school shootings. They are demanding stricter gun control and more efficient school safety.

The march in Washington, D.C is expected to have around 500,000 people attending. Among these 500,000 marchers includes survivors of the recent Parkland shooting. Though the march in D.C is the main event, mock protests have been created worldwide, as there are already 425 planned.

Rather than waiting for lawmakers to make a change, students are taking things into their own hands and organizing action. Students have also declared the march is to ensure the safety of American youth.

March For Our Lives is not the only protest being planned by students. On April 20 there will also be another school walkout. April 20 marks the 19th anniversary of the Columbine school shooting.

Dr. Ellis said that he has been meeting regularly with a group of students who are taking charge of planning for the walkout. He said, “I have spoken to [the School Board members] in hopes of finding an agreement that pleases both us and our students. But if we chose not to approve the walkout, the students who decide to do it anyway will face consequences.”
