Deadly dog flu spreads through the country

Including York, there is a dangerous dog flu going around known as the “canine influenza.” While the flu virus is not contagious to humans, the disease can still be spread to dogs if they come in contact with clothing carrying the virus.

Most cases of the canine influenza have been reported in major cities such as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. However, lately, more cases have been reported in Red Lion, and Veterinarians anticipate spreading farther.

Dr. Kathleen Spencer from the from Patton Veterinary Hospital said that “Some symptoms of the dog flu are coughing especially, decreased energy, fever, which would be difficult for you to identify at home, but a fever just makes your dog feel very sick. They’re low energy. Their appetite may not be good. They may have mucus coming out of their noses and eyes.”

Pet owners are encouraged to take a visit to the vet to get their dogs vaccinated. The popular vaccine costs about $50 and comes in a series of two shots and should be regulated once a year to maintain protection.

Vets stress the importance of this vaccine and advise that pets should not be taken to dog parks or daycares unless they are vaccinated.
