York Suburban Boys Sweep District Title

On March 3 and 4, the swim team competed in the 2017 PIAA District III Boys’ and Girls’ AA swim meet where they raced 38 other teams from across the district. With many victories and successes, the boys’ team went on to win the meet, and the girls’ team tied for third, bringing York Suburban another district trophy.

The boys’ team showed their strength and depth in the meet through the course of both days, walking away with a district title after not winning first place in any event. Captain and senior Karl Schmittle scored eighth in the 100 freestyle and sixth in the 100 butterfly. Junior Aidan Fryar finished second overall in the 50 freestyle and sixth in the 100 freestyle. Sophomore Devon Lonergan finished seventh overall in the 500 freestyle, and freshman Matthew Peters scored eighth in the 100 breastroke.

For the girls, senior captain Jenna Hufnagle finished second in the 100 butterfly. Senior captain Cara Zortman said, “I was so excited to see how well everyone did, and can’t wait to see where we go at states this year.”

The relays for both teams did extremely well at both meets. The girls’ 200 yard medley relay and 400 yard freestyle relay both finished fourth, and the 200 freestyle relay scored second place. On the boys’ side, their 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay finished in second place. Senior captain Trent Golden said he is extremely proud of himself and his teammates and feels everyone did their part at the meet.

Because of their performances at districts, 12 York Suburban students will be competing at the State Meet held from March 15-18 at Bucknell University. On the girls’ states team are seniors Jenna Hufnagle, Cara Zortman, Havannah Suarez, and Megan Hunt and juniors Maddy Abel and Keelie Walker. On the boys’ state team are seniors Trent Golden and Karl Schmittle, junior Aidan Fryar, sophomores Devon Lonergan and Charles Rodgers and freshman Matthew Peters.
