Gochnauer crafts hand-made pottery

We see amazing art every day, but it isn’t every day we meet someone who makes amazing art.  Senior Morgan Gochnauer has been making her own pottery since her freshman year. With this, she has also created her own business, PotteryByM.

Gochnauer was hesitant to start ceramics class her freshman year of high school, but immediately found herself in love with the process. She started to attend classes at a studio in downtown York where they taught her the basics of wheel throwing. All of these new techniques Gochnauer learned really helped to boost her confidence, and in turn create more and more amazing artwork.

After taking functional pottery and sculpture her junior year, Gochnauer realized she could do more with her talent and started to create her own business. One of her art teachers, Jacqueline Geiple, said that Gochnauer always new what she was doing and learned very quickly. She added that hard work and self motivation was a key role in Gochnauer’s success throughout the class periods.

Gochnauer said  her style is delicate, cozy, and modern-country and that each piece is made with love and care by her alone alone. She spent most of her time last summer working on perfecting her work as well as her business. Gochnauer also spends most of her free time making pottery, now that she has moved and created a studio in her basement.

Geiple also said how easy it is to like Gochnauer and her pottery. She feels that people often gravitate towards her soft, delicate and clean style. Gochnauers business has gained a lot of success and attention through the past couple of months as she continues to work hard.

In the future, Gochnauer hopes to donate some of her profit to organizations like the SPCA or THON.
