On Feb. 15, 2016 at 5:00 pm, musical talents from 2016 were honored at the 58th Grammy Awards. Adored artists like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, and Meghan Trainor received awards for their accomplishments in the music industry this year.

Meghan Trainor became especially emotional in her acceptance speech for “Best New Artist” presented by last year’s winner, Sam Smith. The young singer broke through this year with hits like “All About That Bass” and “Lips Are Movin.” Trainor did not stop crying the entire time she was on the stage.

“I’d like to thank LA Reid for making me an artist and my mom and dad for always believing me,” said Trainor whitlest sobbing.

Trainor’s acceptance speech was not the only emotional aspect of the Grammy Awards ceremony. In the past few months, musical legends have unfortunately passed away and so were honored at this years show. Some of these artists include David Bowie, Glenn Frey, and B.B. King.

Most of the tributes received positive reviews, except for Bowies. Lady Gaga and Nile Rogers did their best to squeeze as many of the late singer’s hits into one montague but unfortunately missed the mark when Bowie’s own son, Duncan Jones, took to twitter saying how “irrational” and “overexcited” Gaga’s rushed performance was.

Despite the many tributes to long gone artists, the Grammy Awards honored many living and thriving musicians. From alternative rock to country, artists from every aspect of music were given their moment to shine. Kendrick Lamar walked away with a few wins in the rap category, most specifically for his newest album, “To Pimp a Butterfly.”

“I think Kendrick Lamar’s album was really successful and so he deserved to win,” said sophomore Sophia Matey.

Not only were artists given awards at the Grammys, there were also several performances. Fans of Adele were thoroughly disappointed when the heard that her “25” album was not eligible for any nominations, but were quite pleased when she sang, “All I Ask.” Other performers include Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, and  Carrie Underwood.

“I though “See You Again” [by Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth] should have won because it was a really touching song and was a great way to say goodbye to Paul Walker and really, anyone else who died. The fact that it was dedicated to Paul Walker was a big reason why I liked it,” said sophomore Carter Fry.
