The 88th Oscars award show will be held on Feb. 28. This is a night to honor the individuals and groups dedicated to bettering cinema. On this night, various fashion statements, relationships, and winners will be exposed.

This year’s host will be Chris Rock. Some categories to look forward to include, Best Picture, Actor/Actress in Leading Role, Documentary Feature, Foreign Language Film, and more. Even the behind the scenes work like, hairstyling, makeup, and special effects artists are being honored with such a prestigious award at this event.

“I hope Inside Out wins for best animated film because not only was that movie a tear jerker, but it taught me vital life lessons,” said junior Mary Gurnavage.

Movies are not the only thing in the spotlight at this event. Many celebrities will be there to reflect on this year’s work.

“I would want Leonardo DiCaprio to win for best actor because he has never won one before. He deserves to win at least one if not more because of how great of an actor he is and how many amazing roles he has played,” said sophomore Alex Yelenoc.

“I want Matt Damon to win for leading actor because he did a good job performing his role,” said sophomore Ted Gunn.

The most nominated film is The Revenant which has received 12, followed by a close second, Mad Max: Fury Road in which has 10.

Fashion is also an area of interest during the award season, where most designers give the audience a preview as to what is in store for that upcoming year.

“I am most looking forward to seeing actresses like Jennifer Lawrence and Angelina Jolie on the red carpet. Their fashion is very sophisticated and original but yet is is also very edgy and shows their personalities in a way that makes it appealing to the eye,” said Sophomore Avery Dannel.

This year, fashion and celebrities are not the only thing under fire. The Academy has recently received a lot of heat for featuring mainly white people. Those who are criticizing the Academy’s decision believe that there were many, well-deserving people of color who did not receive a nomination or so much as an honorable mention. Some have even gone to the extreme as to boycott the award ceremony.

“Uniformity and discrimination against people of color has been a long term problem in the media. The amount of African America winners is minuscule compared to the immense winnings for Caucasian people. The oscars this year are completely whitewashed, further promoting discrimination and racism to continue,” said sophomore Maddie Levans.

Nonetheless, this is a time to reflect on all that has happened during the year, the good and the bad.
