Starbucks cup brews controversy

The new Starbucks cup for the holidays has struck some controversy on whether it is a good change or bad change. The new Starbucks cup is red this year unlike other holiday Starbucks cups of the past.

A local Starbucks manager said, “The cup has an ombré plain design which was designed this year as kind of a blank canvas to which you can place your own design.”

The manager also said, “People are having us write ‘Merry Christmas’ on their cups as well as ‘Happy Hanukkah’ and many other joyous sayings.”

Some think the new Starbucks cup is good. Sophomore Katie Hill said, “I think it is good because they are sort of welcoming everyone.”

Some think there could be improvements like freshman Mariyah Easterly who said, “I think to be more fun and like the holidays there should be more than just red. There are more colors than red associated with the holidays.”

Others do not think the Starbucks cup is good or bad like freshman Destiny Lara who said, “I do not drink Starbucks so I don’t really care about the color of the cup.”

According to the Starbucks manager, “The controversy is actually quite humorous to our employees. Some person out there is saying that our red cups are just anti-Christmas or even anti-Christian because of [the] lack of decoration this year. In years past we have had snowflakes, reindeer, and even just decorative words such as “joy” or “cheer”.

The manager also said, “In my opinion, as well as millions of others, those past cups do not promote Christmas… Only holiday/winter fun. Are you to tell me Muslims or Jews do not enjoy joy or snowflakes?”

The manager said that the controversy has not affected business at all: “If anything, it has increased our sales because the people really want to see the cup in person and post on social media their experience.”
