Throughout the month of November, York Suburban is participating in a coat drive sponsored by the Communities That Care High School Student board.

Through Nov. 21, CTC will be accepting clean, gently used, youth size coats. The coats will be given to less fortunate families in the York Suburban community. These coats are for elementary and some middle school girls and boys. For students that do not have old coats lying around, CTC is accepting cash donations so that coats can be purchased for the children.

“With an ever increasing number of YS families falling into lower income classifications, the need for assistance on many levels has become more apparent,” said advisor to the CTC High School Student board, Leslie Platts.

In the past, CTC has assisted in several community events and programs such as the annual dodgeball tournament, the variety show, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Now they can add this coat drive to their list.

“This is the first year that CTC has run a coat drive. Based on the success of this event, this may become an event which will happen annually to benefit the YS community,” said Platts.

The high school students in charge of this event have independently hung posters, gathered collection bins, and communicated verbal announcements. All of this work is in effort to raise awareness and to collect coats, of course!

To receive as many donations as possible, CTC has opened this to the middle school, too. They have a traveling representative communicating what is going on at the high school so that the middle school mirrors the high school.

“We should definitely do it again because it’s for such a real and great cause,” said CTC member Maddie James.

The donations goal is twenty coats. Coat donations can be dropped off in a collection bin outside of the office while cash donations should be deposited inside of the office. The grand total reveal will be announced Nov. 21 at the CTC Variety Show during intermission.
