Football team maintains winning season

The YSHS football team has had a successful season with a 5-2 record. Highlights include senior quarterback Thomas Merkle beating the YS passing yards record with 4,450 yards and senior Jonas Atkinson scoring the winning field goal against West York High School from 21 yards away.

Merkle said, “Practices aren’t too bad as quarterback, and my teammates actually get on me for it. I do footwork drills, go over offensive stuff with coach, throw to my teammates and go through our plays as a team. My teammates aren’t allowed to tackle me which is pretty common in football.”

Atkinson said, “We do stretching drills, lots of hamstring stretches. I do ball contact drills, I have a field goal practice where I work my way back through the yards, ect.”

Merkle enjoys playing on the team. He said, “I love my team and the coaches. We have great chemistry and really click well on and off the field. It makes it fun when you’re playing with a bunch of friends.

Atkinson also enjoys being on the team. He said, “The support that the team gives us. Playing with my friends and the coaches is definitely the best part. I even like the pressure of the game.”
