York Suburban High School’s field hockey season is coming to an abrupt close with their senior night occurring on October 15 against Fairfield. “I will miss being part of a family; even though we weren’t a winning team, I’ve had the best experiences in high school because of the lasting friendships I’ve made,” said senior Paige Robison.

This was not a winning season for the Trojans but rather a year of rebuilding. “This season we’re young. We just lost fifteen seniors from last year. We are really trying to focus on the fundamentals but also learning the game,” said coach Elizabeth Milkowski.

West York has definitely been the team to beat for York Suburban. Milkowski recalls a game where they were up against the aggressive rival and the athletes were really giving it their hardest. “We held one player almost a whole half. She scored three goals on us the first half and then we put Maddie Devaney her on. We kept her scoreless for almost the entire last half,” said Milkowski.

When asked about her favorite field hockey memory, varsity player Marianna Rodas said,v”I got to play around a good group of girls. We all really bonded. The hardest part was losing all of the seniors and building up with a younger team, but I had a good time anyway!”

A youth program has been started to try and get a younger audience involved in field hockey. The varsity and junior varsity teams mentor young girls 2-6 grades in a sport they feel compassionate about. They teach skills and techniques as well as act as a role model.

To tap into their charitable and volunteer work, the field hockey team is interested in participating in a specialty event like the boys’ volleyball team’s White Out and the girls’ Black Out. “We have talked about, I don’t think anything is in the works for this year but we have done them. In the past we did one for skin cancer,” said Milkowski.

On October 19, the field hockey team will have concluded its 2015-2016 fall season. “Even though we haven’t won any games yet, I am confident that we will end the season on a high note,” said Milkowski.
