Girls’ tennis hits an ace

This season, the York Suburban girls’ tennis team has been working hard and putting in many hours to achieve their present stance. Currently, the team has a record of 9-1.

Their first defeat of the season was against Delone Catholic, a difficult team to beat. Though they did not come up victorious, they left the match 3-4, a close game.

Through their defeat, the girls are still putting in many hours and effort into their sport. “Tennis is a huge time commitment, so when players seem tired in the halls and class…they are! Their love for the sport makes it all worthwhile,” said coach Rebecca Toman.

This fall season has brought up new challenges for the team. They lost three of their starters and best players at graduation. Though this has been an obstacle, they were able to defeat a long time rival, Kennard-Dale, 4-3.

In preparation for a grueling season, the team starts off preseason nice and easy and then moves into more difficult drills. “We run a lot of drills and do a lot of footwork to make ourselves faster as well as play a lot of challenge matches as doubles games as practice for the real thing,” said senior varsity player Bailey Cross.

The team is always open to support from other students and faculty. “The matches are long and we understand that. But if anyone does come, the hill [behind the tennis courts] is a perfect spot to watch all of the action,” said Toman.

The season concluded on Oct. 6 in Biglerville and with senior night on Mon. Oct. 5 drawing all of their hard work to a close. Though the girls’ tennis season is short, they have several approaching post season matches keeping them busy. “Since our record is so good this year, I am really looking forward to going into counties and hopefully districts,” said Cross.
