Homecoming moves off-campus

York Suburban High School has traditionally held the annual Homecoming dance in its own gym, but Homecoming 2015 brings a new venue in downtown York: the Bond, in an attempt to revamp the event.

In recent years, Homecoming has gotten a lackluster reputation. Freshman Zoë Hornberger said, “People don’t really like it. It’s like an overall failure.” Students are coming in with a negative perspective regarding an event that is designed to create unity among the school.

Because of the change in venue, Zoë believes this year’s dance will be successful. She said, “People want to try something new, so I don’t think it will be a flop.”

Student Council President Devon Hornberger believes that Homecoming will be a hit with the student body because of the change in scenery. Other changes this year include offering appetizers like meatballs, soft pretzels and dessert sliders will be provided through a catering company supplied by the Bond, located in the Royal Square Neighborhood.

To inspire the atmosphere, the theme, “Disney,” will be incorporated more. Additionally, the time has been reduced half an hour and moved to 7 pm until 9 pm. “The intention of this is to not make it so early that kids can’t go get dinner before like they traditionally have done,” said Hornberger.

This also will be a  “closed-campus” event meaning students are not permitted to leave the venue during the allotted times. This is for safety and practical reasons.

Hornberger is well aware of Homecoming’s reputation and is trying to change that perspective. “I’m really excited to see this come to fruition. I spent a lot of the summer working on forging the connections with the venue. I love the people in charge of the venue and I can’t wait to see how it turns out,” said Hornberger.

She along with the rest of Student Council have been designating the summer and early fall months planning on making this a night to remember. “We just want homecoming to be distinct and special again,” said Hornberger.

The dance will be held on Oct. 3
