Reflection

Shelly 2

We are YS Proud!  Congratulations to the graduating Class of 2016!

I am particularly fortunate to serve as the Superintendent of this fine District as my husband and I are now celebrating the graduation of our third child from York Suburban High School. We have been the benefactors of a collective 39 years of a York Suburban education.  The duality of my role – parent and Superintendent – has been very interesting and enlightening and this year’s commencement celebration has prompted considerable reflection on my part.  This reflection has led me to one conclusion:  I owe this community a very large THANK YOU!

I believe that I speak for most parents when I express my gratitude to this community for building and supporting a school district that so effectively serves the students.  Thank you for supporting a district that encourages all students to succeed. Thank you for supporting a district that expects academic excellence.  Thank you for supporting the teachers, administrators, and support staff in this district. Thank you for supporting the extracurricular programs in music, art, athletics and all areas. Thank you for supporting a quality education for all children.

This community is unique and special.  It includes all residents, students, parents, and school employees.  It is evident in countless ways that we support one shared mission:  To educate, challenge and prepare students to shape the future.  More than 200 students crossed the stage last Thursday evening, ready to shape the future.  I have every confidence that they are well prepared to do so. Thanks to the ongoing support of this outstanding community, I expect 200 more students to do the very same thing next year, and the following, and the following.

THANK YOU for all you do to support our students!

Volleyball White Out Raises Record Donations

Boys’ Volleyball- Dallastown @ York Suburban’s 8th Annual WHITE OUT

WhiteOut1

Since 2009, York Suburban has held a WHITE OUT game to help raise money for The Cancer Patient Help Fund.  The event was started to honor Clark Fisher.  Clark was a YS volleyball father of two players, volunteer, and avid volleyball player who lost his brief battle with lung cancer in November 2009.  YS will be donating to The Cancer Patient Help Fund in memory of John Yorgey, Sr., a parent of two former YS volleyball student-athletes.  John lost his fight against cancer in July 2014.  New this year, a portion of the funds raised by YS will be donated to the Clark E. Fisher Memorial Scholarship, a Penn State York scholarship for students studying engineering.

YS invited Dallastown to participate in this year’s event during the Dallastown vs. YS volleyball match on May 3, 2016. Dallastown raised funds for Olivia’s House.  Since 1996, Olivia’s House has been providing bereavement therapy services for children in York.

Approximately 200-300 people attended the White Out game this year.

Each year our event grows larger. The 2015 White Out vs Red Lion raised over $9,000.  This year our goal was $10,000!

The 2016 YS vs Dallastown White Out raised $11,569.00! The following amounts were donated to each charity.

  •         The Cancer Patient Help Fund- $4,968.32
  •         Clark E. Fisher Memorial Scholarship- $3,008.34
  •         Olivia’s House- $3,592.34

YS Post Prom: A 16 Year Tradition!

One of the long-standing traditions established by York Suburban parents and community members is the York Suburban Post Prom event. Since 2001, Post Prom has given York Suburban students a safe and supervised place to go after Prom. The event is open to YS Prom attendees, and all Junior and Senior students regardless of whether they attend the Prom.  The party theme this year was “Trojan County Fair” and, accordingly, there were loads of fun interactive carnival games, tournaments, entertainment, food, and prizes.

On behalf of the Post Prom Planning Committee—Colleen Igo (Co-Chair), Gina Kouma (Co-Chair), Joanie Nolin, Lisa Hocker, Stephanie Bowman, Kris Wasilewski, Andrea Good, Kris Marino, Leslie Platts, Casi Babinchak, and Nikki Hunt—thank you to the dozens of people who volunteered and/or made a donation in support of the 2016 Post Prom. Without their investment of time and financial resources, this event would not have been possible!

First Impact Foundation Closet Opens in High School

Impact Foundation (IF) students built and stocked the first of six “Impact Closets” that they will construct at each York Suburban building to help provide basic supplies like toothpaste, shampoo, clothing and food.  The video was filmed and edited from 6 am to 5 pm on Saturday, April 16 and debuted that same evening at the York Suburban Education Foundation’s Celebration of Excellence.

This short video shares their story:  Impact Foundation

IF conducted a school wide needs assessment and successfully secured a grant from the York County Community Foundation that has provided the funding to build the closets. IF has also secured startup funding through the Jeffrey D. Sindicich Foundation, Carolyn F. Warman and the York County Alliance for Learning.

The Impact Foundation, a committee of the York Suburban Education Foundation, is made up of a group of York Suburban High School students and is focused on continuing York Suburban’s commitment toward educational excellence by educating and engaging students in meeting the needs of their own school community through philanthropic compassion.  IF’s motto is “Students Helping Students”.

The York Suburban Class of 1965 celebrated their 50th reunion year in 2015. In honor of this occasion, class members donated a total of $10,000 to continue the tradition of excellence in education at York Suburban.  Classmates Connie Shorb and Joel Snyder presented their gift to support annual grants awarded by the York Suburban Education Foundation (YSEF) to teachers and students. The class of 1965 has challenged all YS graduating classes to consider a reunion year contribution to YSEF to join in doing more for YS students. Thank you, YS Class of 1965!

Students Launch Business with Kindness

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

For four York Suburban students,  a love of baking together, especially sweet and colorful macarons, grew into a non-profit bakery business with a passion for giving back.  Elise Atkinson, Lilly Cook, Phoebe Caplan, and Bryn Walsh explain in their own words how baking with a purpose provides enjoyment while benefiting Charity: Water, an organization that raises money and sends volunteers to build wells in third world countries:

Elise: I went to Ethiopia in 8th grade and after seeing the everyday struggle that women and children encountered to get water for their families, I knew that I wanted to make a difference. A Pinch of Kindness has allowed me accomplish this knowing that our donations truly benefit others.

Lilly: I hope that through A Pinch of Kindness we are able to make a difference in even just one family’s life and provide them with easy access to water because as fun as it is to bake cookies with my friends, that is really why we are pursuing this.

Phoebe: When starting A Pinch of Kindness I think that we all knew that we wanted to do something larger than ourselves.  We realized that we didn’t need the money, but that there were millions of people in the world who did. Each time we sell a macaron, I get an unexplainable feeling of joy knowing that we are helping others, one macaron at a time.

Bryn: Living in America, I think we often take for granted some the simplest things in our lives, one of those being water. In starting A Pinch of Kindness we wanted a way that we all could spend time together, but more importantly a way to help make an impact on people’s lives somewhere else in the world.

If you would like to support A Pinch of Kindness, and enjoy some incredibly delicious macarons, please visit their website to read more about the mission and how to order.
