A grant of $2,040 was provided for Applied College Tuition, the High School Dual Enrollment Program – Dr. Denise Fuhrman and Dr. Brian Ellis.  This grant will enable selected students, who may not have the ability to pay for college course tuition, to experience college courses while still attending high school. One School, One Book

OSOBSubmitted by:  Kelly Paraskevakos

York Suburban High School is proud to announce its first One School, One Book Program! This exciting event will encourage students, staff, parents, and community members to read the same book at the same time, creating a school-wide conversation.  This program strives to promote reading for enjoyment, as well as foster both community and discussion.

York Suburban High School has chosen The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. When Randy Pausch, a professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give a lecture, he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave wasn’t about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment. It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. The Last Lecture asks readers to consider several important questions: What wisdom would you impart to the world if you knew it was your last chance? If you had to vanish tomorrow, what would you want to be your legacy?

The Last Lecture became a New York Times bestseller in 2008, and remained on the list for 112 weeks, continuing into the summer of 2011. It has been translated into 48 languages and has sold more than 5 million copies in the United States alone. Join York Suburban High School this summer in our first all-school read as we start the new school year thinking about the legacy each of us wants to leave behind.

Want to start reading? York Suburban staff and students can visit the LMC (Library Media Center) to sign out a copy every other Wednesday from 10 AM-2 PM this summer or you can find the book free online by clicking on the One School, One Book link on the YSHS webpage.

“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.”

-Randy Pausch

YS Partners in Career Development

Mrs. Wise’s full day kindergarten class teamed up with Mrs. Hammond’s high school Careers in Child Development class this year for enrichment and fun. The high school students prepared lessons and activities for their Valley View buddies including butterflies with wings to fly, Mother’s Day cards with hand printed fronts, and healthy foods with a pineapple cutting demonstration. This teaming allowed the YSHS  students to lesson and program plan and gain real career experiences. The Valley View buddies looked forward to one on one relationship building and educational enrichment from high school friends. The culminating activity was a visit to the high school for breakfast, a building tour, photo booth and a special planetarium show. This program will continue next year and provided valuable experiences for everyone involved.
