Stuck in Snow Globes at Indian Rock!

The students in Mrs. Guyer’s fifth grade ELA classes met with the students in Mrs. Hare’s and Mrs. Mahorney’s third grade classes for their February writing assignment. Together, the students created plots for their narrative writing pieces, “Stuck in a Snow Globe.” The third graders gave the fifth graders events related to the conflict and resolution, and the fifth graders then enhanced and developed the plot events into narratives with themselves as the characters. Once the writing was complete, the classes met to share their narratives and make snow globes that reflect their stories’ adventures.

Seussical Week 2017 at Yorkshire Elementary

Submitted by Kathy Pavoncello

Read Across America Week was recently celebrated at Yorkshire Elementary, coinciding with Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Local authors visited the school and read their books to our students, and each day brought a unique form of celebration. Reading Specialists, Kelly Gulley and Patty Murray, with the help of retired Yorkshire teacher, Karen Moyer (reprising her role of Queen Bee), did a wonderful job of organizing this fun-filled week. Each day began with a poem or song, and a Reader’s Oath, recited by Mrs. Gulley or Mrs. Murray, and repeated by students during morning announcements. In addition, students enjoyed searching the hallways for photos of Yorkshire teachers and staff reading books in odd and comical places.

Monday was “Free To Read Monday.” Students dressed in red, white and/or blue, and were encouraged to read their favorite book throughout the day. Tuesday was “Oh the Places You’ll Go Day.” Yorkshire friends wore an outfit that described a favorite vacation spot, destination college (or city they want to visit), or future occupation. Wednesday was “Wacky Who Wednesday,” with lots of crazy hairstyles and wacky mismatched outfits! Teachers performed a ‘switch-a-roo,’ and partnered up other grade-level classes to read and learn together. Thursday was “Pajama Day,”  just in time to welcome our YSHS students as they performed a teaser rendition of their 2017 musical, “The Pajama Game”. The accompanying book for the day was, “I’m Not Going To Get Up Today”. On Friday, students came to school dressed as a favorite book character. They brought their book (with their character) to school, and filled the hallways with color and creativity as they marched in a parade to the gym for an assembly. Yorkshire’s teachers performed a hilarious skit, posing as various Dr. Seuss characters. Prior to returning to their classrooms, students surprised everyone by spontaneously joining together to sing, “Dr. Seuss, We Love You,” a song they learned during the week, written by Carmino Ravosa.

What a great way to round out a week dedicated to the joy of reading, and special tributes to a timeless author and illustrator!

Students Take the STEM K’Nex Challenge

On February 23, 2017, three teams from York Suburban Middle School competed at the LIU #12 annual Stem Design Challenge Competition.  Team YS6 included Megan Shorb, Edward Lulo, Louis Tapp, and Olivia Sarsfield.  Team YS7 included Noah West, Addison Barley, Matthew Aulthouse, and Kirollos Mina.  Team YS8 included Alex Gleba, Devlin Ravegum, Michael Forster, and Jack Ports.  Students were coached by Mrs. Karen Campbell and Mr. Jared Moore.

This year’s challenge was to create a new amusement park ride for a theme park using a maximum of 1400 K’Nex pieces and at least one K’Nex motor.

In this challenge the park owners are working to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer and are creating a fun family park that will inspire others to be environmentally friendly. The ride must represent the environmentally friendly approach that the owners are requiring by making “green” a priority in the ride’s design.

The components of the competition required the ride design, an inventory of pieces and budget of the project. Teams also wrote a work journal and created blueprints of their design.  A two minute presentation was prepared for the judges explaining the model and how the design answered the challenge.

Teams were judged on creativity, teamwork, challenge success, design, and presentation.

The YS7 Team earned the Best Creative Design award.

Indian Rock Elementary Third Graders Are Inventive!

Submitted by Sherri Mahorney

Each third grader in Mrs. Mahorney’s class was given the assignment of researching an inventor and his/her invention. Then, they wrote a multi-paragraph informative writing on their inventor’s life and his/her invention. Each student created several Google slides to go along with the memorization of the speech they gave on March 2. Their audience was composed of parents, family members, State Representative Kristin Phillips-Hill, Dr. Merkle, Dr. Maloney, and Dr. Gulley. Succeeding at this difficult task gave the students a great sense of accomplishment. Each student landed among the stars that day!

Mini-THON – A Proud Tradition

Submitted by Steve Whiteley, Student Council Advisor

For the fourth year in a row, York Suburban High School students stayed on their feet all night and raised a record $70,820.17 for Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Seniors Georgia DuMars and Emily Hamberger oversaw seven committee captains and dozens of committee members to organize Mini-THONⓇ 2017, attended by over 450 students and 50 parent and teacher volunteers. In four years the students have raised over $200,000 to provide funds for research in pediatric cancer and help families with expenses not covered by insurance. Partnering with Penn State’s THON, the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, Mini-THONs raised over 5.5 million dollars last year. Area businesses are encouraged to become Mini-THON sponsors for 2018. A Four Diamonds Festival and Color Clash will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017. Check out the district website for more information in late March.

York Suburban Swimming

Boys: The York Suburban Boys Swimming team can now call themselves Division II and District 3 Champions! The team’s hard work and dedication has paid off in many ways this season. The boys were able to win the district gold medal without one individual or relay earning first place. This truly speaks to the depth of the team and really brings to life the term “team victory”. The boys finished with a score of 231 followed by Cocalico at 219 and Bishop McDevitt at 213.5. Best of luck to our boys that are competing at the state level!

Girls: Coming off of a Division II League Championships, the girls continued to impress at Districts finishing in the third place overall. The girls, much like the boys, finished in third in large respect to a total team effort. With many individuals and relays contributing points the girls finished in a very respectable third place. The girls will also be sending six individuals to compete at states and we wish them the best of luck.

On Thursday, March 16, the swimming team  earned medals in two events at the PIAA (AA) State Championships. The boys took seventh place in the Medley Relay and Aiden Fryar took seventh in the 50 Freestyle.

York Suburban Girls Basketball

Congratulations to our Girls Basketball team for qualifying for the PIAA State Tournament! The girls have navigated through a very challenging division and district, but persevered to qualify for states. They have been battle tested throughout the season and it shows as they were able to win a very close game over Wyomissing in the District Tournament. The girls have played very tough against some of the best teams in the state and ended their season against Montoursville High School in the state competition.

It was a fantastic winter for the York Suburban Cheerleading Competition Team, a highly  motivated group that persevered to overcome some obstacles  thrown their way throughout the course of the season.

The team, through hard work and dedication, placed fourth at YAIAA Competition in December. The girls continued on to compete and make us YSProud at Districts in January. Congratulations on a great season!
