The Board of the York Suburban Dollars for Scholars would like to thank the entire York Suburban community for an amazing Battle of the Buildings.  Special thanks go out to Jamie Evans and Eric Hoffman for organizing this year’s event. In all, $5,500 was raised through ticket and t-shirt sales, concessions, and the mascot relay. We pride ourselves on maintaining low overhead so money raised will go directly into our scholarship pool.  We also are dedicated to providing support to YS seniors throughout their college careers. Funds to our general account allow us to fulfill this commitment by giving renewable scholarships. If you want to know more about Dollars for Scholars please contact us at: info@ysdollarsforscholars.org or visit our website at www.yorksuburban.dollarsforscholars.org. We welcome volunteers to review scholarship applications and always welcome new board members.  If you are interested in getting involved please direct questions to our president Stephanie Sullivan at steshinka@yahoo.com.

From Courts to Classroom

Submitted by Matt Marshall,  Athletic Director

York Suburban Boys Basketball players recently visited Indian Rock Elementary. Student athletes took the opportunity to read to elementary students and reconnect with former teachers. The students enjoyed interacting with positive high school  role models, and the student athletes learned how they can impact and inspire the youth in our school community.

Student Council Hosts First Snowcoming Dance

Submitted by Dr. Brian Ellis

Student Council ventured into new territory this winter as they hosted their first ever Snowcoming Dance. The council was interested in developing another major dance to fall between homecoming and prom, while also enhancing fundraising efforts for MiniTHON.

Hours of hard work came to fruition, when over 200 York Suburban students descended upon Wisehaven Banquet Hall  to dance on January 21.  York Suburban graduates and the owners of FnP productions, Alden Funkhouser and T.J. Platts, welcomed students by positioning two large spotlights out front of the venue and provided the music and indoor lighting for the event.

The “big hit” of the night was the dance-off for Snow King.  The balloting for Snow King came down to a tie between seniors Daniel Lee and Ben Igo, prompting the dance off.  While Ben showed off some great moves, Dan stole the show by busting out some incredible breakdancing moves to win the honor of Snow King.

Student Council hopes the excitement generated from this event extends to the up-coming MiniTHON and plans to establish the successful winter Snowcoming Dance as an annual tradition.

Students Triumph Over Faculty in Annual Rivalry

Submitted by Denise Stayman

On Tuesday evening, February 7, York Suburban Middle School students and faculty took part in our annual Faculty vs. Eighth Grade Students Basketball Game, in conjunction with our staff-baked Cookie War. The game was a nail-biter up to the very last seconds as students pulled ahead and won the game by 2 points! Dr. Kristi Smith won the coveted Cookie Bake-off trophy this year for her frosted party-cake cookie. In addition to the yummy cookies, snacks were available for purchase during half-time. YSMS raised $748.62 from this event. These proceeds will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of York County and will be added to our proceeds from the Bowl For Kids’ Sake event to be held on March 3 and 4.

100 Days Wiser at Yorkshire Elementary

Submitted by Kathy Pavoncello

Every year, school districts across the country mark the 100th  Day of School with unique celebrations, and Yorkshire Elementary School is no exception. On Tuesday, January 24, our hallways were filled with elderly staff and students sporting gray hair, canes, knee socks, bifocals and bathrobes. Highly creative students imagined themselves as centenarians for a day. Each classroom devised its own celebration to mark the occasion, and cake was generously donated by Dawn Food Products, Inc. in York.  PTO members distributed a piece to every student, as well as carnations to staff members. Another 100th Day activity centered around the concept of giving to others. Students were asked the following question, “If I had $100, I would donate it to ___________.” The answers were quite impressive, ranging from being funny to rather humbling. Overall, the honest reflection that went into most of the answers was enough to make the community proud. Our Yorkshire students are very thoughtful and generous!
