First Graders Practice Random Acts of Kindness

Mrs. Meckley and Miss Baquero’s first grade class at Valley View Elementary is learning about mindfulness this year.  They recently created placemats for Meals on Wheels of Columbia, Pennsylvania, to practice spreading acts of kindness into the community.

Countdown to MiniTHON !

Student Council is in the midst of final preparations for MiniTHON Friday, February 24 at 9:00PM through Saturday, February 25 at 7:00AM.  MiniTHON is a “miniature” version of THON, an annual winter dance marathon at Pennsylania State University.  Each THON benefits the Four Diamonds Fund, an organization dedicated to conquering childhood cancer.

While the high school students attending MiniTHON won’t be dancing for 24 hours, they are expected to stay on their feet the entire night, encouraged and entertained by a multitude of different activities.

Expecting as many as 400 students to participate, Student Council set a fundraising goal of $80,000, approximately $20,000 more than 2016’s total.  Anyone interested in contributing can access the Donor Drive webpage: Four Diamonds Donor Drive

Musicians from the York Symphony Orchestra performed their interpretation of Miss Nelson is Missing at Yorkshire Elementary School and Valley View Elementary School.  This performance is an extension of Stage the Page, administered through the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center.  The program is designed to inspire kids to want to read and to expose them to live musical performances.  Each classroom teacher received a donation of the picture book, Miss Nelson is Missing, to read to their students.  In the spring, students in kindergarten through second grade will enjoy the stage performance of the play in the beautiful Strand-Capitol Theater.

The Pajama Game Opens on YSHS Stage

The cast and crew of this year’s high school musical, The Pajama Game, are excited the curtains will rise the weekend of March 3 and March 4.  Show times are 7:00PM on Friday and Saturday with a matinee planned for 2:30PM on Saturday.  Information about tickets is available on the high school website (http://www.yssd.org/yshs).

Coins for K-9 Update

Mrs. Biser’s and Mrs. Mason’s classes had a “Coins for K-9” drive and were able to donate $310.00 to the K-9 unit.  Lieutenant Godfrey and Dargo were back in the building February 2 to visit with Mrs. Mason’s afternoon class and were surprised with the students’ donations during their presentation.

Impact Foundation Drives for Donations

During the week prior to the Dollars for Scholars Battle of the Buildings (BOB) competition held on Saturday, February 4, the Impact Foundation ran a district wide donation drive to collect more items for the Impact Closets located in all six York Suburban buildings. The Impact Foundation partnered with Dollars for Scholars and the Parent Teacher Organization’s (PTO’s) to make this event possible. Without their support, the Impact Foundation would not have been able to collect so many items. The Impact Foundation joined in the BOB competition by awarding points to each item that was donated. The school with the most points at the end of the week got five points added to their team total at the BOB event. The winning team was the Intermediate Ironmen who had a total of 2,214 points. Primary Powerhouse secured second place with 1,034 points. For added fun, the Yorkshire and Valley View PTO’s teamed up with IF by promoting their drive during the celebration of their 100th day of school. The Impact Foundation collected 1,900 items in total! All these items will  stock the closets, and help the Impact Foundation supply students throughout the district with items and materials that they need. The Impact Foundation is a student-led committee of the York Suburban Education Foundation (YSEF), and their motto is Students Helping Students.

York Suburban Sports Round Up

Submitted by Matt Marshall, Athletic Director

Boys Basketball: The boys finished the year on a strong note, winning their last three games. The team has built a strong foundation for a very promising future. The freshman team lost only one game and the junior high team celebrated an undefeated season. We are very optimistic about the future of Boys Basketball at YS!

Girls Basketball:  The girls had a great second half of the season. They recently secured the sixth seed in the District 3 Playoffs, and secured a first round bye before playing Bishop McDevitt. The girls have been battle-tested in a very strong Division II conference. Best of the luck to the girls as they move into the playoffs!

Wrestling: The wrestlers are heading into individual postseason with sectionals at South Western High School on Saturday, February 18. The team finished its regular season with an exciting 45-45 victory over York-Tech winning on criteria. The Junior High team capped off a fantastic season by winning the Hershey Wrestling Tournament. The junior high boys were undefeated in the regular season, and show great promise for the future of Wrestling at YS. Best of luck to all of the boys at sectionals!

Swimming: Both the boys and girls teams have carried on the York Suburban swim program tradition of excellence. The girls and boys finished  first in Division II and both teams now chase titles as they move into the postseason. The hard work, dedication and commitment  throughout the season should lead to a very successful postseason. We wish our YS swimmers the best of luck!
