Dress code contemplations

While some people believe that the dress code is too strict, the dress code is very much needed. Students do not need to be distracted by others wearing inappropriate clothing.

We need to stick to the school’s guidelines because this is a high school, not a fashion show.

Compared to other high schools, York Suburban has a very reasonable dress code. It is quite comparable to the dress regulations of jobs that hire students. On average, the most common violation is leggings worn without coverage.

York Suburban has a certain level of expectations and those expectations have potential of being lowered by constant dress code violations. Our dress code was written by the school board with input taken from administration and students. Some students have tried to take the dress code and turn it into a matter of judgement, saying that they have been denied the right to wear clothing that others seem to get away with due to their different body types. However, the dress code was written without body type intentions.

Personally, without dress code, girls in particular would come to school wearing clothing that shows off too much. Walking through the halls, people see very iffy clothing, even with the dress code in place. Girls wear shorts that are way above fingertip length, leggings that are clearly see through and yoga pants that show off too much. Girls walk around with various body parts exposed.  Men sag their pants to the point where their underwear is clearly seen, and often wear things that refer to drugs or violence.

Now don’t get me wrong, typically people shouldn’t be judged on something as trivial as clothing. We need to keep in mind however, that this is a school and not a popularity contest. We are not here to show off the latest trends, regardless of how important that may seem to people. We come here to earn an education, which is something that tends to be taken for granted.

It is understandable that that is how people identify themselves, but there are certain places where you need to tone down your “individuality,” I am all for being different, being yourself. However if that “identity” is inappropriate for school, it should not be allowed.

York Suburban dress code is not hard to follow. Students act like it is the end of the world when they can not wear a specific item of clothing to school, but in reality, we need a dress code or these kids would be coming to in very inappropriate attire.
