Best Buddies holds annual 5K run

Everyone deserves a friend; that’s the message Best Buddies intends to convey and support with their Best Buddies 5K Run. This event is important because it supports a great cause and raises awareness about it as well. Everyone can support this cause by coming out on Saturday, April 6th. The 5K Run starts at 9 AM and the one-mile fun-run will start at 10 AM.

Not only does this event help show others that everyone deserves a friend, but it also raises necessary funds for the Best Buddies chapter and honors the memory of advisor Neil Gutekunst’s mother. When asked about how this event started, Gutekunst said, “Sarah Gutekunst came up with this idea after running in the Best Buddies 5K in Washington DC.  She thought we could have a race of our own to raise money for our own chapter.  Then, when my mother (her grandmother) passed away, we decided to make it a memorial race.” The Best Buddies 5K Run represents such a great cause and everyone should participate; it’s an event to have a great time and raise money for such an amazing cause.

Furthermore, Gutekunst expects as tremendous a support as the group received last year, which he said, “had a strong turn-out last year (over 100 runners) and we are hoping for more this year.”  Hopefully, there’s an even bigger turn-out this year, with all the hard work the group has dedicated to this event. Gutekunst said this about the 5K committee’s work, “The 5K committee has been amazing. They have done everything.  I am only the adviser, so I advise, but they do all the work.  They created the registration form and the course, handle all the registrations, design and order the t-shirts, secure sponsorships, handle all race-day help, and so much more!” The 5K committee has dedicated a lot of time and effort into this event and as the YS Community is known to do, there should be tremendous support.

Everyone should go out and participate, even if running isn’t a favorite hobby. Best of Luck to Best Buddies!
