Music Department Takes Trip to Nashville

The band works yearlong to improve their playing and get rewarded by going to Nashville in March

The band works yearlong to improve their playing and will  soon get rewarded for their hard work by going to Nashville in March.

This March, the music department from York Suburban will be visiting Nashville, Tennessee.  They will be leaving the evening of Monday, March 25 to drive overnight and returning home the morning of Saturday, March 30. The music department is comprised of the orchestra, the marching band, the color guard, and select members of the school chorus. The group will be taking coach buses and driving the full 740 mile distance from York to Nashville.

Matthew Husler, the band director, said “The band, orchestra, and YS singers group will all be performing in Nashville: the band and orchestra at the Wild Horse Saloon in downtown Nashville, and the YS singers outside the Grand Ole Opry building.”
The band will be doing many other things while there as well, like visiting the Music Hall of Fame, because Nashville is so well know for the music produced there. The group will be having a backstage tour of the Grand Ole Opry, which is a museum that features hundreds of top country music stars over the years. They will be visiting Honky Tonk Row a street in Tennessee that is known as a musical mecca. The kids will be taking a tour of the home of president Andrew Jackson, and a visit to the Belle Meade Plantation. As a last stop, the band will be going to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee to see the Wonderworks attraction.
When asked how they raised money to go there, Husler said “Students participated in many fundraisers throughout the past few months and years.” And to the YS band, Nashville was the best choice because it is the music capital of the word.

The music department ventures to exciting places every four years. The trip serves as a bonding experience for the group of friends and allows an opportunity to show to off their musical skills in different cities across America.  Freshman Paige Smeltzer, a member of the YS color guard, shared “a reason for the trip is so we have a chance to represent the York Suburban marching band and color guard and really show what we can do.” The YS band worked very hard to get to go on this big trip this year, and they definitely deserve it!
