Music students at York Suburban received the chance to tour the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland during their trip.

Members of the York Suburban High School orchestra, both full and select choirs, and band traveled to Cleveland, Ohio on Thursday, April 23, 2015. They were accompanied by YS music directors and a handful of parent chaperones.

Three coach buses departed at 3:45 p.m. Thursday. The drive was around six hours, and the group arrived at the hotel in Hudson, Ohio late Friday night.

The trip was three days long and the itinerary packed full of activities. On Friday, the music groups visited the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland where the band performed “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Danza Sonora.” The YS colorguard danced as the band accompanied them with a song entitled “Joy.”

Choir joined the band for a performance of a Beatles medley which included short sections of music from “Penny Lane,” “Ticket to Ride,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” and “Hello, Goodbye.”

The orchestra played “Pompeii,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing),” and “Sweet Child of Mine” in the Rock Hall following the band.

After the performances, students were permitted to explore the Great Lakes Science Center, which included an array of hands-on science exhibits. Later, the choir and YS Singers sang from the bottom floor of the science center, attracting many visitors.

The students then drove to Sandusky, Ohio in the evening, where they went bowling and stayed overnight at the Kalahari Waterpark Resort. Students had the chance to explore the waterpark on Saturday.

According to Nicole Peritz, a junior band and choir member, the day at Kalahari water park was exciting because it allowed music students from all the ensembles to come together and make everlasting memories. The wide variety of slides and other water rides provided students with a fun way to relax and experience new things.

On the evening of April 25, the group attended a concert at Severance Hall and witnessed a performance from the Cleveland Orchestra, returning to the Kalahari Resort to stay overnight one last time. Peritz stated, “I really enjoyed the orchestra concert because of the incredible passion and talent of the symphony performers and the truly beautiful venue.”

On Sunday morning, students ate brunch in the House of Blues in Cleveland, observing a performance from gospel singers and even actively becoming involved in the concert. In the afternoon, students, staff, and parents boarded the coach buses and began the drive home.

Senior Seth Rosenkrans enjoyed the trip. “It was nice to get out of York for a couple of days and spend some time with some really cool people,” Rosenkrans said.
