YS boys’ volleyball wins with more than just a score

With over 250 attendees at this year’s White Out game, the boys’ volleyball team defeated Red Lion with a score of 3 to 1. The team has just completed its eighth year of participating in the game and already reached its highest donation, a total of $8,392.04 raised through t-shirt and ticket sales.

Each year, each of the two competing teams choose a cause to sponsor and donate the money they raise to that fund. This year, YS chose the Cancer Patient Help Fund, and Red Lion chose their Mini-Thon. This brings a whole new motivation to the game; the boys knew that whether they won or lost, they would be contributing to something great. “I’m just grateful that all the people who came out donated money to this cause,” junior Paul Um said. “It’s not really about the game, but the volleyball was still great.”

Given York Suburban’s reputation for school spirit, it was no surprise to see the massive crowd of white cheering their team on. “Having all the people there was motivational too…you don’t want to let them down!” said sophomore Gus Corsaro.

Both the coach and the team appreciate the support they received. “Without the hard work of the players, parent-volunteers, and local businesses that sponsor us, we wouldn’t have anything,” said coach Oliver Good.

“It really gave me a real purpose to win,” Um said in reference to the cause, “but it was not for winning’s sake; it was about winning to make a statement about my dedication to abolish cancer.” Corsaro expressed his gratitude similarly, saying,“ It makes me feel good to know that we’re making a difference in other people’s lives.”

Suburban’s athletic teams and student body continue to help fight cancer in many ways, and this is just one of the ways they have accomplished that.
