Student foundation to be named

Want a new way to get more involved in school related and fundraising activities? Want to help your peers at York Suburban who are in need? Dr. Denise Fuhrman, assistant principal of York Suburban High School, and guidance counselor Tina Howe have collaborated to make this possible.

It was announced on the high school’s News Link this year and advertised as “Students Helping Students”; however, Fuhrman has stated that that is an unofficial name, and the goal is to have the students who are in charge to give the organization its true title.

Here is what is so special about this foundation: The students are in charge. Fuhrman and Howe are simply mentors to the students in this organization, and it will be run by the 12 students, mostly juniors, who volunteer to be the chairs of the organization.

It is a work in progress. The supervisors and the student leaders will meet periodically throughout the remainder of the year. The foundation will connect through this year to discuss the budget, the business plan, and their predictions on turnouts to events.

The purpose of the organization is ultimately to assist families and students in need from the York Suburban School District. There are several families in which Fuhrman and her team intend to help: “Kids are coming to school cold and hungry…that’s unacceptable.”

Fuhrman stated that the foundation expects to be launched in the fall of this year as the new school year begins.

This is how it will work: The student chairs of the variety of committees will recruit other students to help them with the work within the committees. The chairs will even be given assignments, goals, and projects, and in result they will receive credit for their work in the foundation, like a class.

The committees will plan and revise every aspect of the events that are held by the nameless foundation. It is the job of the community and the rest of the students in the York Suburban School District to attend the events, support the organization, and assist the foundation in raising money. The money raised will be given to the families in need that live in the school district for necessities such as food and clothing.

It is predicted that the foundation will be a success and that it will make a significant impact on families in need inside the school district. Fuhrman reasoned, “We have a caring school population.”
