Welcome to Haunted York Suburban

Trick-or-Treating Night, an event sponsored by NHS, was held on the evening of Oct. 29.  Sallie Spanswick and Daniel Anderson, National Honor Society advisors, are in charge of York Suburban’s trick-or-treating night.

YSHS participates in the NHS’s trick-or-treating every year. Although the high school has not participated in this for a while, said, “This is the second year NHS has organized this event. It would be nice to think it would become a tradition.”

“Several members from last years’ NHS were in Mr. Peace’s physics class and he told them about a similar event at his own children’s school, and they thought they would like to try the same thing at YS,” said Spanswick.

Spanswick said, “Clubs decorate doorways or classrooms in the science and English wings. It is open for children from Valley View and Yorkshire and their siblings.”

Spanswick said, the best part about participating in the NHS’s trick-or-treating is when everyone is enjoying themselves and having fun. “The little ones have a great time and I think it is so cool to do this in high school. The high schoolers have a lot of fun too!”  Halloween was something that was celebrated a little differently for Spanswick. She said, “When I was young, we didn’t dress up and go trick or treating, but we did play games; bobbing for apples, eating a sticky apple on a string.”

She also said, “pumpkins were not common in England at the time when she was younger, so we carved rutabagas (a cross between the turnip and the cabbage) as lanterns.” Many students recalled that they had a lot of fun.

As far as the amount of cans that YS collected go, many were collected and given to those who are in need of them. Many of the cans will be used for families in need of food for the holidays.
