Should report cards be electronic?

York Suburban School District has recently increased its involvement with the technology movement. This school year report cards will not be printed out on to paper. Students and parents will have to access it online.

Every student was recently issued a Chromebook this school year. The Chromebooks were handed out to the student body to assure not having access to the work done in school won’t be a problem.

Most people would rather have their report card in their hand, especially if it is good. People like the traditional things like being able to post their report cards on their refrigerator to see the progress they made each marking period.

Junior Paige Robison said “I like having my report card in my hand because it tells me my GPA, and if I got honor roll.” There is no place on Infinite Campus that tells someones GPA, or whether or not someone received honor roll.

The report cards being printed out is tangible evidence and that is what most people want. People like to be able to hold evidence of their accomplishments in their hands.

Athletic director and assistant principal Chris Adams said the reason report cards are not being printed out this year is because “everything in the school is being moved to be available electronically that way it will be accessible all the time.”

Junior Shyela Oliveras said, “I would rather have my grades in my hand. I like to be able to show my parents especially because my mom does not really get on to Infinite Campus.”

The report cards are not the only things being completely converted to the computer Instead of having a traditional three ring notebook with paper, students are using online notebooks.

When asked who made the decision to work toward eliminating paper, Adams said, “the teachers, administration, and parents all agreed on this decision because everybody has a Chromebook so even if there is not a computer at home the information is still available.”

Senior TyJah Bair said, “I think that they should go back to paper report cards because that is what I have been getting since I was a child.”
