Skylar Volz Takes on High School Choir

Most people have been  nervous about something in their lives. Some learn to overcome those fears. Just ask freshman Skylar Volz, a singer since fourth grade, who recently overcame her fear of singing.

She’s been singing since elementary school; however, she hasn’t always allowed her singing talent to be public. Volz said, however, that she plans to become more involved in more music activities. In the past five years she has, she said, “matured obviously, especially my voice. I have definitely become more professional with my singing I think. I am more involved with extra activities.”

Until last year during the middle school choir concert, no one knew she has such an incredible voice. She sang the song “Blackbird” and since then, the fear vanished. She said, “Miss Koontz, my middle school acapella teacher, she showed me the opportunities I had and I decided to take advantage of that.”

When Volz finally exposed her singing talent news spread. She was invited to join honors choir. Volz said, “The chorus in high school is much more mature than the one in middle school. The chorus in the middle school is much more restricted; however, the high school’s chorus has much more oppurtunities in it.”

The freedom is not the only change between the choruses. Last year Volz was in eighth grade, meaning she was ‘top dog’ of the chorus. Now, she has become the baby of chorus. She said, “I do feel kind of different.” She said, “people at the school do not treat us, the ninth graders, any different.”

Volz has a full schedule with her music programs. She said,  “I do practice different things per week but I really do enjoy it [choir programs]. It does not become frustrating, I look forward to it.”

Some, especially a freshman, may feel intimidated, however Skylar does not. She said, “I think that in our choir there are so many different types of singers put together as one voice which means that if they are a ton of other greats being put together that should be amazing.” Skylar said she has a passion for music and a love for the harmony of voice. In the future Skylar does plan to continue with her career of singing. “I think I definitely will continue singing. It’s something i do really well. I want to exceed in it and I want to more experience,” she said.
