York Suburban’s Gay-Straight Alliance’s members will be raising money and awareness for this year’s Pride Prom. This year, Pride Prom will break the silence of the Day of Silence on April 11. Pride Prom is a prom that accepts straight couples and same sex couples.

Students who sign up for Day of Silence will remain silent all day. However, the Day of Silence said, “you may NOT have the right to stay silent during instructional time if a teacher requests for you to speak.” The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about bullying in the LGBTQ community faces. Students participating in the Day of Silence will wear ribbons.

There were quite a few misconceptions about Pride Prom last year, namely that only couples of the same sex could attend. GSA advisor Betsy Bedell said, “All kinds of couples should attend. It’s not exclusive. It will be a fun time for all.” GSA members hope that Pride Prom will convey the message that the dance is meant to be a celebration of the LGBTQ community, to support LGBTQ students through their struggles.

In order to raise money for Pride Prom, members will be doing as much fundraising as possible. Bedell said, “We’re hoping to call a local place to do fundraising. It’d be ideal if we could sell baked goods at a game.” The GSA will also earn profits from selling Pride Prom tickets, which cost five dollars each. The GSA will advertise both events as often as possible leading up to the actual date.
