The Challenges of Winter Weather

The winter weather has certainly provided the York Suburban community with its share of challenges.  Late entries, school Shelly Merkle 12-02-13 editedclosings, power outages, and altered schedules have become the norm this winter.  These challenges have left many of us thinking that spring cannot get here soon enough!

York Suburban started this school year one week earlier than in previous years with the expectation of finishing at the end of May.  Two snow days were built into the calendar and will therefore be made up before May.

The School Board recently approved a change in the calendar providing another make up day for students on March 7, a previously scheduled Professional Development Day.  All other cancellations must be made up in June.

GRADUATION SCHEDULED FOR MAY 29:  The school district does intend to proceed with Commencement as scheduled on May 29, 2014.  We will do everything possible to keep this date as we recognize how special this date is for our families of seniors.  As the culmination of 13 years of hard work we would like to honor this date for our seniors.

Many people ask how the decision is made to cancel or delay school.

It is the responsibility of the Superintendent to make the decision, but it is only made after consultation with many others.  Student safety is the primary concern.  We must ensure that we are able to provide an appropriate learning environment in our buildings while also knowing that the roads, walkways and parking lots are safe for travel.  It is important for the Superintendent to consult with the district facilities staff, the bus company, township officials and even meteorologists.  More detailed information on this topic can be found on the homepage of the district website, www.yssd.org under the Hot Topics section.

At the time of this writing, I have one eye on the weather map as we anticipate yet another storm.  We will get through this.  Our students will remember what a five-day week feels like.  And we will be back to normal before you know it.

Until then, Stay Safe and Warm!

Dr. Shelly Merkle, Acting Superintendent

College Applications Go Electronic

When you were in high school, do you remember all the paperwork involved in submitting college applications?

At York Suburban High School, that process has gone electronic.

Principal Brian Ellis reports this year the school is using a software program called “Naviance.”  The program is a comprehensive career and college planning tool.

“Students can access career profiles and inventories to help identify their areas of interest,” he says, “and they have access to a wealth of information about colleges all within this same tool.”

The tool “culminates” in assisting students with the college application process.  Students list all their prospective colleges in the system and invite their teachers to submit letters of recommendation all within the tool.  In many cases the students will also submit their electronic applications through the system.  “This enables the student and school to keep electronic ‘checklists’ of all the steps in the process, helping to ensure all materials are submitted in a timely manner,” he adds.

The tool also provides efficiencies for the district as well as a wealth of data.  “It enables us to submit school materials such as recommendation letters and transcripts electronically, saving preparation time and the cost of postage.  It enables monitoring of applications without keeping numerous folders/files.  It also warehouses all our college application data.  We can pull lists of the schools to which our students have been accepted, denied, wait listed, and also where they are attending.”

Over the years, the program will build profiles of the type of York Suburban student (test scores, activities, GPA,) who has been accepted or denied at school.  “This will help our students make more informed decisions when applying to schools.”

A final component is that it provides a link to the National College Clearinghouse.  “We can pull information on all of our graduates in regards to their college enrollment status and their major/degrees, allowing us to monitor how well the students do after they leave York Suburban,” he said.

February is “Kindness Campaign” month at both Yorkshire and Valley View Elementary Schools.

This year’s theme, “Spreading Sunshine,” has a very personal meaning for the schools’ staffs and students.

Carter has created a foundation to raise funds for other children facing complex medical situations.  The foundation’s theme is “Helping Kids Just Be Kids.”  The Mission Statement for the foundation is:

To provide stress-free and enjoyable opportunities to children and teen cancer patients, and their families, during the many weeks that they are undergoing proton radiation treatments at the University of Pennsylvania Robert’s Proton Therapy Center.

Money raised at Valley View and Yorkshire during February will be donated to the Carter Foundation (www.carternbowman.org).
