Skyping with Canadian Classroom

Mrs. Cheryl Johnson’s class at Valley View Elementary recently coordinated a Skype session with a 5th grade class in Canada to  learn about their Boxing Day traditions and how they celebrate Christmas. Students were able to ask questions about each other and discover what it is like to live in Canada. They learned it was  -10 degrees Fahrenheit in Canada that day. Brrr!!!

Holidays Around the World

York Suburban Early Learning Program at Valley View’s Family Partnership Event for December

Submitted by Jessica Clough, Center Director

family-involvement

This month, Preschool, K Prep, Kindergarten Enrichment, and School Age are traveling with fictional character, “Globe Trot Scott,” learning about holidays around the world. Each day, we open a package containing a letter, activities, and a book to read about the country he visited and the holiday traditions.  We also talk about our family traditions. We invite families to share with their child’s class how they celebrate the holidays. The activities selected are based on the early learning standards and interests of each age group. We incorporate Social Studies, Cooking, Reading, Writing, Math, Fine Motor, and Gross Motor Skills into our unit of study.

Our unit of study will conclude with a Holidays Around the World family night. The families are invited to return to school in the evening for a glimpse of what the children have learned about other cultures. We also bring treats to share and show a favorite holiday movie in our country- “The Polar Express!”

If you would like to learn more about our programs, Preschool through School Age, please contact Erika Alvarez, Center Director, for Yorkshire and East York (717.885.1230 x3161) or Jessica Clough, Center Director, for Valley View and Indian Rock (717.885.1226).

Submitted by Laura Horowitz

standingdesks

YSEF awarded Alicia Kowitz a grant to purchase six standing desks for her math classroom at the Middle School. These six students “usually are at the desks” but sometimes swap with seated students who want to stretch their legs for a few minutes.

The students love being able to think on their feet!

Indian Rockers on the Run

Submitted by Katie Barrett

Indian Rock Elementary’s Girls On The Run have completed their fall season. Girls On The Run is a character building/running program offered by the YWCA. Each practice is filled with life lessons about what girls may face one time or another and teaches strategies on how to handle different situations appropriately. The girls practice scenarios on one another and help each other find suitable solutions. To culminate each practice we run together. Each girl is recognized for her accomplishments in the program and the excitement of growing both as a person and a runner is celebrated at our end of the season 5k race.

Our girls did an excellent job this season and are looking forward to starting a new season in the spring. If you are interested in joining Girls On The Run contact Betsy Hoffmaster at bhoffmaster@ywcayork.org
