Four of its most outstanding student-musicians were selected to represent York Suburban High School in PMEA District 7 Ensembles.   These students auditioned and were identified by area music teachers as some of the best musicians in the area.  District 7 covers eight south-central Pennsylvania counties: Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York Counties.  The selected musicians were Meredith Singleton (Chorus), Daniel Lee (Orchestra), Jack Korver (Band), and Sean Smith (Band).  Daniel Lee was ranked 5th out of 100 violinists.

The musicians will join their peers from the other schools for a weekend of practices, a concert, and the opportunity to audition for the regional ensembles.   The District Chorus will perform on January 14 at Eastern Lebanon High School, the District Orchestra will perform on January 28 at Central York High School, and the District Band will perform on February 11 at Eastern York High School.

A Common Project

The high school Job Training class recently visited Valley View Elementary for a special holiday project.  The Job Training class, taught by Dianne Crawford, focuses on giving students various real life experiences to better prepare them for the work force.  This special class project partnered the high school students with five year old friends from Melinda Wise’s full day kindergarten classroom. Together they worked on a holiday craft project to make an ornament that could be hung from a tree.

Submitted by Sonia Guyer

This November marked the 3rd Annual Turkey Pardon ceremony in Mrs. Guyer’s English Language Arts classes. After learning about the tradition of officially “pardoning” White House turkeys, the 5th graders took the role of turkeys and wrote letters to President Gulley, asking for a pardon from the Thanksgiving table. This year there were eight finalists noted for their persuasive writing, with two of them selected for a full pardon. Congratulations to Delaney Welter, Brailynn Garcia, Riley Greenberg, Harrison Strine, Braeden Hilty, and Lily Richardson for their finalist finishes, and to Zaynab Kline and Liam Leik for their official pardons!

Winter Concert Delights at Middle School

The York Suburban Middle School Band performed their annual holiday concert on December 14, 2016. Directors Mrs. Amy Intrieri, Mr. Matthew Husler, and Assistant Director Mr. Matt Thoman led the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade musicians through a medley of winter season favorites.  The hard work of the musicians and instructors parlayed into a beautiful and entertaining evening for everyone in attendance.

Cookies, Crafts, and Cards… Oh, Joy!

Submitted by Kathy Pavoncello

Each year, our wonderful Yorkshire Elementary PTO sponsors a fun-filled night of cookie decorating in our cafeteria. Thanks to the donations of Yorkshire families, as well as those of local retailers, children were able to express their creativity by decorating a cookie any way their hearts desired. When asked about his favorite part of the cookie decoration process, kindergartner Grant Terwilliger replied confidently, “The icing!”

Holiday music set the mood for the event, encouraging production of carefully crafted snowflakes that now adorn our cafeteria windows, welcoming in the winter season. This year, students also shared their sense of community by creating unique holiday cards for residents at a local senior residence. Glitter, stickers, crayons and glue covered the tables as little hands got busy creating holiday cheer. The students wondered how the senior residents would receive the special messages. Kindergarten student Aubrey Gurreri said, “I think they’re going to like them a lot!”

We think they will, too!

“Giving Tree” and New Impact Closet Provide a Lending Hand

Submitted by Kathy Pavoncello

As we enter the holiday season, Yorkshire Elementary is putting into action how we are truly a Community of Encouragement.  We are here for the whole child. Our staff works hard to provide an excellent education.  In addition, we look beyond our students’ school day to consider what more can be done to provide support.  Thank you to the families and staff members that selected a pumpkin or turkey from the ‘Thanksgiving Tree’.  By sponsoring a Yorkshire child, you are spreading happiness and joy.  Gifts are to be delivered to the office by Monday, December 19.

As a community outreach service, Yorkshire participated in a holiday food drive. Collected food items, along with a turkey donated by the York County Food Bank, will be packaged and provided to our own families who express the need for a wonderful meal.

Lastly, the YS Impact Foundation, a student-run committee of the York Suburban Education Foundation, completed our Impact Closet build.  The Impact Foundation has one goal – students helping students within their own community.  Our closet(s) are stocked with clothing, hygiene items, school supplies and snack items.  The goal is for students to get what they need so they do not lack the essentials for school and home and can concentrate on learning. Yorkshire truly provides a warm and caring environment for our children.  Thank you for your part in making our school a special place.
