Welcome Back to York Suburban

Hello and Welcome Back to the Students and Staff.

Kate Orban 2007_editedThe earlier start to the 2013-2014 school year meant for a shorter summer than usual.  During this time. preparations for the new school year have been ongoing and when students return, we will be ready!

NEW DOCTORATES — Is there a doctor in the house?  The answer is a resounding YES! Within the past few months three of the York Suburban Administrative Team received their doctorates.   Congratulations to:

Dr. Denise Furhman, Assistant High School Principal

Dr. Scott Krauser, Assistant Middle School Principal

Dr. Greg Gulley, Indian Rock Principal

The District thanks them for their dedication and hard work to achieve this honor and appreciate how the knowledge gained benefits the entire York Suburban community.

TECHNOLOGY — Are you a technology native or a technology immigrant? A technology native is defined as those born after the introduction of digital technology.  If you are like me, you are considered a technology immigrant — one who was born after the introduction of digital technology but has migrated to its use.

How we educate our students today has changed in many ways.  Even our youngest students are tech savvy because they are technology natives.  How they approach the use of any form of technology differs in how technology immigrants approach it.   At York Suburban School District, we have done an excellent job of utilizing technology throughout the entire district and bridging the technology native-technology immigrant gap.  The adults and students alike use various forms of technology daily.

ELEMENTS OF SUCCESS — Though the manner in which we educate our students continues to evolve, the reasons the students in the York Suburban School District continue to achieve high results in school and success in life are simple; a highly qualified staff that is dedicated to every student’s success, involved parents, a strong community connection and a Board of School Directors that puts students first.

YSEF Funds Laser Engraver for YSMS

Jared Moore, York Suburban Middle School technology education teacher, has received a $1,000 York Suburban Education Foundation (YSEF) grant to purchase a laser engraver for the Applied Engineering and Technology Department.  It will  be available for use by all students in the middle school.

The grant will allow the middle school to continuously access the instrument rather than share with the high school.  The teacher says, “A laser engraver has the ability to transform the mindset of a student with its abilities to create personalized touches on just about any project.”

For a complete list of YSEF grants and how to apply for a grant, go to www.ysef.org.

Summer Camps with a Purpose

York Suburban School District hosted a series of educational summer camps at Valley View Elementary School for students entering second through fifth grades this fall.

MARS Camp focused on math and English skills.  Putting mathematics to work in a fun setting, the campers would build an igloo out of gallon plastic water bottles and create string art by doing math problems to find out where the strings should go, among other activities.

Ready…Set…Learn was designed for the younger students and their reading and spelling skills.  Previously, the camp had been called BEARS Camp.  About 60 children were signed up for the program.

New Homeroom Matrix at YS High School

The traditional placement of York Suburban High School students in homerooms alphabetically by grade level will be a thing of the past when school opens in late August.

Principal Brian Ellis said the homeroom assignments will mix students from each of the four grade levels in the high school and will remain in those homerooms for their entire time in high school.  As seniors graduate from the homeroom, freshman students will be added the following school year.

The principal explained the change is to allow older students to mentor younger students and help them become an active part of school life.  The new format will also allow homeroom teachers to get to know and work with students over four years, rather than one.

The new Advisory Program was designed by a committee of faculty.

How to Become a Key Communicator for YSSD

The Key Communicator Network is gearing up for the new school year.  If you would like to become a Key Communicator, contact Wendy Erwine at 885-1122 or werwine@yssd.org.

This group of  students, parents, retirees and community members has a strong interest in all of York Suburban schools.

The purpose of the Key Communicator Network is to promote a continuing exchange of accurate and timely information between the York Suburban School District (and, more specifically, the Superintendent) and the community.

Key Communicators receive e-mails or fact sheets as needed and are asked to share this information with the community through e-mails, discussions, phone calls, etc.  In addition they e-mail or call the superintendent with concerns, questions or rumors.
