FOODPLAY Provides Food for Thought

Submitted by Kathy Pavoncello

FOODPLAY is an Emmy Award-winning live theater program that travels to schools nationally to deliver the motivating messages of good nutrition and making healthy choices. In the spirit of overall wellness, the program recently came to Yorkshire Elementary to the delight of students and staff. Using juggling, magic, music, and audience participation, the program helped our students celebrate National Nutrition Month, recognized each year in the month of March. The program was sponsored by the Yorkshire Elementary PTO.

New Absence Reporting Option

In an effort to make reporting student absences more convenient for families, York Suburban School District has implemented an online student absence reporting form.  The form may be found on the district website Homepage (Navigation Bar Absence Form) and on other building homepages as the absence note icon.

Parents/guardians still have three school days to submit a valid excuse for a student absence.  This can now be done by sending in a signed parent note OR using the new online form.  You will always receive a phone call if your child is absent regardless of the absence form being completed.  Please contact your child’s school office if you have any questions.

Visiting Volume City

Following a lesson on finding the volume of Willis Tower in Chicago, students in Mrs. Crumbling’s fifth grade math classes engaged in a STEAM project called Volume City. Working in small groups, students created buildings for their city using predetermined measurements. With some buildings, they were given the volume of the building and had to select a length, width and height that would work. They had to find the total volume and cost for all of the buildings in their city. Students then placed their buildings in their city and used their imaginations to create backgrounds and details. Some of them even designed 3-D details (a U.F.O.) and residents for their town. One student exclaimed, “This was so fun! We should do it for every unit.”

Yorkshire Elementary Students Walk Tall in Famous Shoes

Submitted by Kathy Pavoncello

Our second grade Yorkshire Elementary students put forth a lot of effort recently, learning about famous people, both past and present. Each child chose a famous person he or she admires to research. They learned about their home lives, the rise to fame, how they became famous, and notable causes.  Each student wrote a graded essay using the facts from their research. Finally, using props, computer graphics and hand-crafted posters, the students stepped into character and shared their stories with parents, teachers, and each other. In this way, each class became a talking, virtual wax museum.
