Visiting Volume City

Following a lesson on finding the volume of Willis Tower in Chicago, students in Mrs. Crumbling’s fifth grade math classes engaged in a STEAM project called Volume City. Working in small groups, students created buildings for their city using predetermined measurements. With some buildings, they were given the volume of the building and had to select a length, width and height that would work. They had to find the total volume and cost for all of the buildings in their city. Students then placed their buildings in their city and used their imaginations to create backgrounds and details. Some of them even designed 3-D details (a U.F.O.) and residents for their town. One student exclaimed, “This was so fun! We should do it for every unit.”
