Message from the Superintendent

I am pleased to invite you to Let’s Talk YS, an opportunity for open dialogue between community members and the Superintendent.  There are two programs scheduled to accommodate as many participants as possible.  Please consider joining us on Tuesday, April 25, 6:30-8:00PM and/or Wednesday, April 26, 10:00-11:30AM in the Education Center.

Come with an agenda or just to listen and share. I am particularly eager to chat about how to create a more inclusive community. How much a part of the YS community do you feel? How could we make you and others feel more welcome? Do all students feel safe? Do all students feel valued? Please consider joining me to share your thoughts on these questions and any other topic you would like to discuss. If you have no specific agenda, come out and meet others and just listen.

It is only through continued open dialogue that we can learn and grow as an organization. Your input and feedback is vitally important to the continued success of the York Suburban School District. We are:  A Community of Encouragement.  A Culture of Excellence.

Middle School Hosts Annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake Event

Middle schoolers dressed as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, McDonald’s menu items, and characters from popular movies in the middle of winter can only mean one thing…it’s Bowl for Kids’ Sake time! On Friday and Saturday, March 3 and 4, Laser Alleys was taken over by YSMS students, families, and staff participating in the school’s annual event to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of York and Adams Counties. Some came in full costume, others wore spirit wear to display their YS pride, but regardless of their apparel, the YSMS community came out in full force to raise funds like never before. This year, over 330 bowlers on 70 teams raised a combined total in excess of $23,000!

Students participating in the event on Friday evening had the option to bowl and also attend a dance at the school hosted by YSMS Student Council. On Saturday, bowlers could choose to participate in laser tag at the bowling alley. Prizes were awarded for top fundraising teams, best costumes, and high fundraising individuals. For over 20 years, YSMS has supported Big Brothers Big Sisters through Bowl for Kids’ Sake, and each year the event sparks student excitement while offering the opportunity to give back to the community. Event co-organizer Anne Perkins sums up the weekend by sharing: “It is amazing to see the amount of effort students, families, and staff put into this event! The costumes they create, the funds they raise, and the pride they show as a school community make all of us very proud to be a part of YSMS and the partnership we have with Big Brothers Big Sisters. We’re already planning for next year!”

Honor Society Students Sponsor Egg Hunt

The high school National Honor Society students recently held an outreach event for the district’s kindergarten students.  Kindergarteners at both Yorkshire Elementary and Valley View Elementary were treated to an Easter Egg hunt on April 10.  Students found the hidden eggs and were able to then turn them in for small prizes.  Both the high school and kindergarten students enjoyed the experience!

High School art students in Drawing I and Drawing II classes submitted their sketch ideas for the VANS Custom Culture sneaker design contest.  Each year 3,000 high schools across the nation compete. Each high school receives 4 pairs of blank white VANS sneakers which must be designed following the themes of art, music, action sports and local flavor.  The Drawing II students narrowed down the sketches and worked collaboratively to help refine the designs.  The following students comprised the final design team: Devante Embrey- Banks, Cara Fielding, Cajsa Fryar, Logan Miller, Jack Passariello, Elijah Tapp, Luna Ulysses, and Asa Williams.

The VANS company will select 50 finalists from each region which will then be put to a public vote from April 26-May 10 at the VANS Custom Culture website. In addition, graphic design students Morgan Gochnauer and Keelie Walker created a digital entry for the “technology in design” graphic entry. The winner of this part of the competition will have their design on the VANS custom site where it can be selected and applied to VANS sneakers.

YSEF Awards Grants for 2017

2017 Grant Recipients

The York Suburban Education Foundation (YSEF) is pleased to announce it has awarded eleven grants totaling $45,078.54 through its 2017 Grant program.

Greenhouses…To Grow Healthy and Successful StudentsDr. Denise Fuhrman and East York Third Grade (East York Elementary School)

A grant of $1,549.34 will allow the third graders at East York Elementary to participate in experiential learning opportunities in science and mathematics through the purchase of portable greenhouses.  As these students are applying their content learning by “getting dirty” growing their own seedlings, they will also engage their community by marketing and selling the plants they grow at the annual East York May Day.  The greenhouses will also be utilized by East York’s newly created Envirothon team for fifth graders as they conduct experiments and research.  This grant was made possible from endowment proceeds through the Jeffrey D. Sindicich Foundation, a donor endowment fund held by YSEF at the York County Community Foundation.  The fund is in memory of Jeffrey Sindicich, York Suburban graduate class of 1986.

Escaping Language Limits – Laura Gordon (East York and Yorkshire Elementary Schools)

In 2016, YSEF supported this pilot program which aims to build connections through “Imagine Learning”, an award-winning software program that features interactive content for the increasing population of English Language Learners.  This program provides first-language support in 15 languages, while gradually translating reading for the students to begin acquiring essential English language skills.  To encourage consistent participation when school is not in session, this $750 grant will fund three face-to-face activity meetings throughout the summer with students and their families to keep the program active and celebrate student progress with families through fun incentives.

Mindful Moments and Yoga for Kids– Lorie Meckley (Valley View Elementary)

The goal of these two grants, totaling $2,339.54, is to enhance the district’s innovative approach to improving students’ social-emotional well-being through lessons in mindfulness inspired by The Mind Up Curriculum.  This grant will facilitate the creation of a Mindful Moments Room, a private space with a calming atmosphere where students can go to focus on the present, calm down, relax, and recenter.  It will also provide teachers professional development on the benefits of yoga, yoga-based breathing and relaxation techniques.  Yoga classes for students, led by a professional instructor, will also be part of the learning experience with the goal of working toward independent skill use.  Students who learn to effectively use mindfulness strategies have more effective concentration during instruction, are better able to nurture and develop healthy friendships, have improved academic skills, have better time management skills, have lower anxiety and stress levels, and have improved working memory.

Learning Commons District Initiative:  From Library Media Center to Learning Commons – Amy Kendrick (YSHS); YS STEAM Lab Classroom – Tac Thomas (YSHS); STEAM Integration – Donna Krane, Matt Moran, Karen Campbell and Jared Moore (YSMS); 2017 Kindergarten STEAM – Marilyn Henning (Valley View and Yorkshire Elementary Schools)

YSEF has awarded $30,000 to be distributed among these four grants in support of a district wide “Learning Commons” strategic initiative to incorporate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) concepts into the York Suburban curriculum at all learning levels. STEAM promotes inquiry and project-based learning, collaborative learning, critical thinking skills, innovation and creativity. From incorporating coding, engineering, and design into kindergarten lessons to enhancing STEAM labs in the high school to transforming the middle and high school libraries into flexible learning spaces that allows for collaboration and exploration, the collective “York Suburban Learning Commons” grant reinforces the district’s dedication to maintain academic rigor, critical thinking and problem solving skills.  These grants are supported with corporate funds donated to YSEF through the PA State Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program.

Trout in the Classroom – Katie Green, Nancy Karkoska, and Jamie McFadden (YSMS)

In 2016, YSEF granted funding to Katie Green to launch “Trout in the Classroom” (TIC), an interdisciplinary program provided by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Environmental and Ecology, and Pennsylvania Trout Unlimited.  This successful pilot program, which allowed students to raise brook trout by observing and monitoring a coldwater ecosystem in a classroom aquarium, exceeded student engagement expectations.  This $3,000 grant will allow the TIC program to expand into two more science classrooms so that all seventh grade York Suburban students benefit from this exciting experiential learning.

Job Ready Career Skills Online Program – Jill Feltenberger and Beth Milkowski (YSHS)

This $1,295.00 grant will provide funding for a web-based product that is designed to teach students the fundamental skills that employers have identified as key to success in the workplace.  This cross-curricular program will cover topics including work habits, workplace effectiveness, communication skills, business etiquette, and the job search.  This program will offer necessary tools for success upon graduation regardless of a student’s post high school plan.

Stand Up For Kids – Kristie Kopp and Lorra Cummings (YSMS)

Growing on the pilots of similar grants awarded for adaptive furniture options in 2015 and 2016, this $6,144.10 grant for alternative classroom furniture in middle school math classes will provide for standing desks benefiting the physical, cognitive, and emotional needs of middle school students.  These desks will enable students to focus and boost brain function, which research has shown to promote academic growth.  Providing students with desks where they can stand will continue to benefit students through increased levels of engagement while encouraging more discussion, collaboration, and ultimately, higher level thinking.

YSEF has awarded 114 grants totaling $264,188 to teachers, administrators and students since its inception in 2008.  Funds are made possible by donations from individuals (including former and current YS parents, YS alumni, YS current and retired YS staff, students); corporations; foundations; and community partners.  For more information, visit www.ysef.org and follow “York Suburban Education Foundation” on Facebook.

Rooting for Spring Vegetables!

Submitted by Helen Heidler, Whitsons Director of Food Services

York Suburban recently held a Welcome to Spring vegetable display competition – and the competition was fierce! The high school assembled a rock band, the middle school a bunny garden (complete with a Whitsons wheelbarrow), and Indian Rock Elementary also created a garden featuring cauliflower sheep grazing on green coconut. East York Elementary was “school mascot creative” with a dragon and a fooditude vegetable train. Yorkshire Elementary devised a beautiful vegetable garden, and Valley View Elementary engineered a vegetable train rolling along a track. The creativity was amazing!

Chefs John Koutras and Sean Arnold judged the competition. The winning school will receive an outdoor BBQ for their students and a coveted Bunny Trophy!

York Suburban High School was ultimately awarded the distinction: Winner of the First Annual Vegetable Competition.  All schools did such a fantastic job and the students loved the displays.
