The York Suburban High School Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry class participated in a lab and plant tour to learn how chemistry may be applied in real world settings on Thursday, October 19, 2017, at UTZ Quality Foods in Hanover. Led by chemistry teacher, Mr. Chris Kurowski, students enjoyed learning about the process of flavor development all the way through to the plant production line.

Students reflected on the experience the next day in class:

“The chemical processes involved in flavor sciences are extremely interesting.” – Justin Sellman

“It was interesting to learn about the extrusion process behind producing their products. It was surprising to learn there are only 112 flavor chemists in the country.” – Harrison Perring

“It is fascinating how much research, time, and energy goes into producing such a simple product.” – Harrison Perring

“There are only about 112 flavor chemists in the United States. If you don’t have good taste, you’re fired.” – Sarah Hartinger

“The vegetable sticks are made of noodles and contain no vegetables.” – Peyton Laughman
