School Performance Profile Results Are In!

Kate Orban 2013 photoGreetings Everyone,

The change in weather has signaled that fall has truly arrived!

In addition to the arrival of fall, the new School Performance Profile (SPP) information has been released by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.  Taxpayers, parents, educators, and others now have access to a comprehensive resource that provides detailed information on the academic quality of Pennsylvania public schools including traditional public schools, brick-and-mortar, cyber charter schools, and career and technology centers.

The SPP also meets No Child Left Behind requirements and is a required component of Pennsylvania’s new educator evaluation system, signed into law in 2012.

The release on October 4 included a profile of nearly 2,400 of Pennsylvania’s 3,000 public schools.  Approximately 600 public schools had discrepancies in their data and that information is expected to be released by December.

The new system no longer utilizes Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) but places  schools on a 100 point scale. Schools scoring over 70 are considered satisfactory. Each level (elementary, middle school and high school) incorporates different criteria to determine the Profile score which can be found in detail at www.pde.state.pa.us.

YORK SUBURBAN RESULTS.  I am very pleased to report the York Suburban scores are as follows:

York Suburban High School           97.4

York Suburban Middle School        96.8

East York Elementary                   84.7 (Title I School)

Indian Rock Elementary                89.2

Valley View Elementary                 92.7

Yorkshire Elementary                    92.8

The criteria and results are based upon the performance, annual academic growth, attendance, and other factors of ALL students in the York Suburban School District. As the data is studied in more depth, the District will plan to improve with specific criteria, where needed.

OCTOBER 21 MEETING.  If you are interested in the details regarding the SPP and York Suburban’s performance in particular, I invite you to the October 21, 2013 Board meeting which will be held in the high school cafeteria.  At that time Dr. Patricia Maloney, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction, will be doing a presentation for the school board and the community.  In addition, Dr. Maloney and building administrators will answer questions.

The results are indicative of the hard work of the staff, students, and administrators.  Congratulations on a job well done! I would be remiss if I did not also thank the Board, parents and community for the ongoing support of this District. The investment in the future of the York Suburban students and the York Suburban community is noteworthy.  We are Building Our Future…One Student at a Time.

Thank you!

Dr. Kate Orban
Superintendent

Superintendent’s Survey

Each year, a survey is available for various constituencies to comment regarding the performance of the Superintendent.

From November 1 through November 15 the Superintendent’s Survey will be open.

Watch the website for the link to the Superintendent’s Survey when the link is open.  It is important to have as many respondents as possible. The information from the survey is compiled and reported to the Board of School Directors at a regular meeting in January.

York Suburban High School teacher Marcella Oathout’s class project turned into a book.

“During a diversity committee meeting, several teachers, including me, and administrators were exploring ideas to showcase how our student body has changed,” she explained.

” In addition, we wanted to provide the school and students with a sense that sometimes our stereotypes and judgments are not what we think they are – most often they are false.  As a result, I volunteered to begin a writing project with my students,” she adds.

Mrs. Oathout developed the “Tell Your Story” project, and from there students began the process of creating journals.  The students viewed clips from several films about judgment and false stereotypes, and then they were introduced to a clip from the Freedom Writers.

“This film clip inspired my students to write and share things they never had before,” the teacher noted.  “They took a project that was not graded and turned it into something amazing:  a way willingly to share their stories, and their lives, with others.  Part of the way into the project we were contacted by Leadership York.  I and several other teachers participated in the Leadership for Diverse Schools program during the 2011-2012 academic year.”

The Women’s Giving Circle was offering a $1,000 grant to schools implementing diversity activities into their district, “and Leadership York thought we may be interested in applying.  I wrote a description of several activities.”  The Women’s Giving Circle offered the class a grant with the stipulation that all of the grant funding would be used for the Tell Your Story project and publishing the text.

The end result is the “In Our Own Words” book that was distributed to each of the students who participated, as well as to the high school staff and school board.  “We are hoping to continue this valuable project in years to come, and I am currently exploring other grant opportunities for future volumes of the text,” Marcella Oathout said.

‘Office for an Officer’ in High School Partnership

In a partnership with the Spring Garden Township Police Department, the York Suburban High School is providing work space in an office for a police officer.

High School Principal Brian Ellis said the “Office for an Officer” is not costing the district any money, but is providing an occasional presence of a policeman in the school.

The benefit to the police officer patrolling the township is that he does not have to return to the police station to make phone calls or fill out paperwork, but can pull into a designated parking spot in front of the school, enter the building, and go to the office.

The principal wrote:  “The administration is excited about this program and the opportunity to work more closely with the police department to ensure a safe and secure learning environment for students.”

A Bear-y Good Day for Parades

Students in grades kindergarten through two at both Yorkshire Elementary School and Valley View Elementary School took part in Teddy Bear Parades on Wednesday, October 2.

The students brought their favorite bear — or other stuffed animal — to school that day.

At Yorkshire, the parade route was around the playground and then into the auditorium where the York Suburban Middle School Band performed.

Over at Valley View, the students marched from the school to Dick May Field at York Suburban High School and then around the track.  They then settled onto the bleachers and were entertained by the York Suburban Marching Knights band.
