Message from the Superintendent

Happy August!  We are very much looking forward to welcoming our students on August 16 for the start of the 2017-18 school year.  It is sure to be another terrific year!

This mini-edition of the PRIDE is intended to help you get in the Back to School mindset. We work hard to ensure that all of our students begin the year on a positive note which will then set a tone for the entire year.  Look for a full edition of YS PRIDE later in August.

As with any school year, there is a lot of new this year. Students, parents, and community members are encouraged to review these important items to become familiar with changes that may affect them.

If you have new neighbors with school age children, please reach out to them and make sure they are aware of our early start date. If they have not yet registered, they should go to the District website to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

The York Suburban community has a long tradition of providing a quality education for our youth.  I look forward to building on that tradition throughout the 2017-18 school year!

NEW Stadium/Track Guidelines for Facility Usage to Begin July 31

On Tuesday,  August 1, the high school stadium/track facility will open after undergoing significant changes and renovation this summer.  The turf was replaced due to excessive wear and extra security measures are now in place to help prevent improper usage and vandalism.  We appreciate your cooperation and patience during this process.  In an effort to provide a safe and secure environment for our students and community, stadium/track use will require a registration process. Beginning July 31, York Suburban School District residents may start the registration process by completing the Stadium/Track Facility Waiver and Release and returning it to the York Suburban High School Office.  The guidelines for gaining access to the stadium/track facility are located on the YSSD website.  If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Adams at cadams@yssd.org or Mr. Marshall at mmarshall@yssd.org or please call the HS office at 717-885-1270.

New Admittance Protocol for Stadium Athletic Events

With the new school year comes the excitement of interscholastic athletic events.  At York Suburban, we take great pride in our school spirit and fan participation. We encourage all of our students from the high school, middle school, and elementary schools to attend interscholastic athletic events. Beginning in the 2017-18 school year we have implemented two changes in regard to attendance at athletic events to encourage greater attendance but also to provide a safer environment for our students. This fall, York Suburban students in kindergarten through eighth grade with the accompaniment of an adult will receive free admittance to athletic events. York Suburban High School students will receive free admittance to athletic events by providing a school ID to the ticket seller.

We expect our students to demonstrate respectful behavior while attending York Suburban events.  We appreciate your cooperation in our effort to create the best environment possible for our student-athletes and community.

Summary:

  1. ALL NON-HIGH SCHOOL (Kindergarten – Grade 8) students MUST be accompanied by an adult to gain entry to ANY athletic event.
  2. The adult accompanying the school student(s) is responsible for the behavior and well-being of the student(s) for the duration of the athletic event.
  3. All YS students receive free admittance to athletic events.

As representatives of the York Suburban School District, it is the responsibility of our students and fans to demonstrate great sportsmanship and positive character. We appreciate you upholding our standards as a Community of Encouragement for our student-athletes while maintaining a Culture of Excellence at all athletic events.

Student Transportation Information

The postcards from Reliance Student Transportation with student bus information were mailed on Friday, July 21.  If you have not received your student(s) information, please contact Reliance at (717) 714-2139.

As partners in the transportation routing decisions this year, the District and Reliance Student Transportation purposefully reduced the number of bus stops to accommodate more riders so that we could reduce the walk zones. With more riders, the only way to avoid longer bus rides is to reduce the number of bus stops.   In certain cases, this will result in students walking a bit farther to get to their assigned stops.  The District and Reliance Student Transportation will continuously monitor the routes to ensure the best possible service to students.

Some of you may remember a few months ago completing a survey to opt out of transportation. Because we were able to reconfigure the walk zones and other changes have been made, we would like to provide you with another opportunity to complete the survey to opt out of transportation for the 2017-18 school year.  This opt out process will take place annually.

Update: Summer Building Projects

If you have traveled by the York Suburban High School campus this summer, you may have noticed many building projects in action. Total roof replacement began on May 26.  Work is progressing nicely and on schedule to be completed by August 18.

The athletic stadium turf replacement project was completed on schedule. The old turf reached its life expectancy for safe usage. A secure gate will be installed in August.

Other indoor projects include:  new hot water heaters, a new stage curtain, flooring, and rigging in the auditorium, and the installation of new interior doors with secure access control at the high school. Actual construction started May 26. The demolition of doors and frames are on or ahead of schedule. Doors and hardware should arrive the first week of August and new doors for existing frames are expected by mid-August.
