A Taste of the New School Year

Hello:

The 2012-13 school year is now upon us!  I trust everyone had a great summer.

The topic of my letter for this issue is food service.

I am very pleased to announce that beginning this August; Whitsons Culinary Group will be providing breakfast and lunch for York Suburban students.  After a lengthy process, Whitsons was selected because of its commitment to innovative and nutritious meals.

This family-owned business is the fourth largest food service management company in the United States and has been working closely with district personnel to assure a smooth transition.  In addition, Whitsons will adhere to the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act and other award-winning nutrition education programs.

During the food service management selection process, school board members, food service personnel, district personnel, and students visited a school site to taste-test menus prepared by [Read more…]

Language Changes at Middle School

Beginning this school year, students at the York Suburban Middle School will begin taking foreign languages in the eighth grade.

Dr. Patricia Maloney, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, explains previously students received a 45-minute block of a foreign language in seventh grade (the equivalent to a half-year of study) and another 45-minute block in eighth grade (also the equivalent of a half-year of study).

Now the students will receive a full year of a foreign language in eighth grade.  The foreign languages are German, French, and Spanish.

The change allows seventh grade students to receive 90-minute blocks of instruction in both English and math.

Dr. Maloney said students will continue to have the opportunity of taking five levels of language before graduating from the high school.

Something Old, Something New at East York Elementary

Kathy Pavoncello is shown with one of the motivational quotes she is painting on the walls of East York Elementary School.

Students will see something old and something new when East York Elementary School opens for the new school year.

The “old” is the carpeting in the hallways of the original building has been removed and the 1955 terrazzo flooring has been uncovered and restored to its shine.  Bill Boll, Assistant Director of Facilities for the York Suburban School District, says that carpeting has been in place for almost 30 years.  “The floors are beautiful,” he said.  “They were built to last.”

The “new” is a series of motivational quotes and murals painted on the interior walls by Kathy Pavoncello.  A Library Aide at the York Suburban Middle School, art is family tradition.  Several years ago, Kathy’s mother, Judy Everett, painted the murals on the interior walls of Valley View Elementary School.  Kathy painted the mural quotes at the middle school.  Judy Everett is the guidance office secretary at the middle school.

The Pavoncellos are a York Suburban family:  Kathy and her husband, John, are both 1987 graduates of York Suburban High School; one child was in the Class of 2011, another in the Class of 2012, and a third will be in 10th grade.
